Help! Can you please check my thinking about this ring-buying business? I'm just a helpless guy wanting to do what makes my fiancee happy. She's not a demanding girl, but I love her with all my heart, and I really want to make her happy.

We will marry at the end of December. We live in different countries, and I won't be back with her until 2 weeks before the wedding, so we won't have time to shop for rings together except on line. She can't have a ring made in 2 weeks where she lives.

I want to give her a diamond solitaire engagement ring ~ 1 ct, and we will buy wedding rings for both of us.

I think it is important that her engagement and wedding rings look right together. Diamond prices where she lives are not competitive with the big on-line vendors in the USA (~ 20% higher), so we're considering having a loose diamond shipped to her home. A loose diamond makes more sense because the import duty in her country is only 4% on loose diamonds, but 17% if the diamond is set in a ring already.

I don't want to give her a diamond with visible flaws. I've looked at SI2 and SI1 stones where I live. After I have found the flaws with a jeweller's loupe, I can see them in some of the stones without the loupe -- not just immediately, but every time I look at the stone. So I am thinking I should look for a VS2 on-line, and have the vendor inspect it to ensure it's eye-clean. I'm thinking of a 1 ct, G, VS2, excellent proportions, cut and polish, no flourescence. Does this make sense, or is it possible to get an eye-clean SI2 or SI1 if the vendor inspects it? Any recommendations for vendors who will do this?

I don't want to choose the engagement ring without her. She will know what makes her heart skip a beat when she sees it, and what I think is not nearly as important.

Here's what I'm thinking I should do:

1) choose and buy the diamond on line, VS2 and inspected to be eye-clean.
2) have it shipped to her home
3) we can look at wedding rings on line together (skype) and we can narrow the wedding and engagement rings styles down to a few options she really loves.
4) she can take the diamond to choose the engagement and wedding bands at the same jeweller so we can be sure the metal and metal finish of her rings are identical.

Can anyone suggest a better way? Does it make sense? Any other ideas for how to proceed?

It would be nice if my wedding ring matches hers, but to me, it's not nearly as important as ensuring her rings match.

Thanks for your help!

I can''t help but wonder if your fiancee lives in Viet Nam

No cigar.

Oh OK I asked because sending loose stone to viet nam is not a good idea because the postal officer will open all packages for inspection before they contact you. I have sent a couple fedex documents. They still open and verify the content in the box before they contact my family members.

No, this is in a highly business-oriented city in which FEDEX, DHL, and UPS all have a big presence, and courier shipments are commonplace. I was thinking about buying from Blue Nile. They FEDEX to the door, fully insured, and get a signature for the package. I don''t have a concern about security. Only about how to proceed to avoid problems with matching rings.
