My name is Brian. I have recently moved into diamonds to buy an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I have found a stone, but I am wondering what to offer for it.
Gia report from 2008 (seller has price listed for 10,000$, which doesn't help much) When I looked at rapaport from april 2014 it shows 7700/carat for VS2 H. This is a secondary market transaction. I bought a IF G 0.75 carat round brilliant a couple of months ago for 2500 (included 40$ scrap gold in the ring). It was 6800/carat rapaport( so x 0.75 is 5100) and it had good polish/good symmetry, no culet, and ideal girdle, ideal depth, excellent depth, pavilion, and crown angles (it would have come back as a low very good cut from gia). It was an old EGL cert from 1980 back when they still had 3 people evaluate the stone. PS I haven't had the IF stone reset (girl wants white gold instead of yellow gold, and it has to be resized for her) because she wants over 1 carat now after comparing 1 carat versus 0.75 at a local jeweler (I really shot myself in the foot there). How much should I offer for this 1.39 stone? Does anyone know the most current rapaport on a 1.39 H VS2. I am also wondering how much extra to factor in because it says on the rap sheet "stones 1.25-1.49 often trade at a 5-10% premium". Should I be looking to pay about 45-48% of rapaport for this stone. I offered the guy 4300 as a start (4281 was 40% of rapaport) and he is not a dealer, he is the owner of the stone. Anyways, here are the stones details.
I had 7700 rap/carat x 1.39 x 1.05 ==4495$, is that a fairer price, taking into account secondary market used diamond and in 1.25-1.49 range and cut grade, lack of fluorescence, proportions, less than ideal girdle. I really just don't know what range I should be looking to offer for this stone. Any help would be awesome!
P.S. a dealer is where I conduced buying the 0.75 IF stone from a 3rd party owner. That dealer told me he could offer 2800-3000 for that stone. So if I get the 1.39 carat I will sell the other one back to the dealer no problem.
