This site is awesome, I learned so much about diamonds in just a few days. Anyways,

As my finances are not in the kind of shape needed to buy (or even finance) a decent engagement ring, I came up with the idea of using the center stone from my gf''s grandmother''s engagement ring (she was very close to her gm), which I got from her father. I just had it appraised yesterday, and here are the specs on the stone:

Old European cut, 0.92 ct 6.50 x 6.44 x 3.55 mm
This gives a depth of 54%, which is very shallow from what I understand for OEC, but that''s good as it gives the diameter of a 1 ct modern. Table is 46%, medium faceted girdle, medium culet. VS2 clarity, strong blue fluorescence, L color.

Now, I know that L is not good, and I was shocked that it came out as an L, as it looked plenty white in its old setting. However, I did see the yellowish tint when he took it out of the old setting. But he even remarked that he though it was a J until he took it out (probably because of the fluorescence). So, it faces up like a J.

I know that my gf wants a platinum setting, so I''m a little scared about putting this stone in a platinum setting. Any thoughts?

It sounds lovely....and I just LOVE the sentiment of using a treasured family heirloom...

I wouldn''t worry for a minute about the color. Many people prefer slight ''warmth'' in antique cut stones.

I wouldn''t worry about using platinum either...it will be beautiful!

Have you given any thought to what style of mounting your GF prefers??

Ditto Widget. Also I think it will look lovely in plat! L''s can face up very well with a soft white appearance - I know because I have one, plus the flourescence with yours is a help! Pics sometime please of this treasure??

wow, quick responses!

OK you guys are starting to set my mind at ease. I know that it looked plenty white to me, and other than the color, the diamond is in great shape and has a lot of fire.

As for setting, her friends have told me that she really likes tacori settings, but I know they can be pricey. Anyone have a ballpark figure on tacori settings?

I will post a pic next chance I get, maybe later this evening, as long as I get home before her.

Personally I don''t know about the settings - I guess it depends on the style, but some of the other PSers might be able to give you an idea. Look forward to the pic if you can manage it!

Do you know which Tacori setting she would like? I''ve looked at quite a few recently and might be able to give you an idea of the price.
