I am hoping to get some help here from anyone, a certified jeweler or appraisal expert would be great too.

I plan on asking my gf to marry me, and I want to get her a ring, but I am afraid of getting ripped off at a jewelry store with huge mark ups.

Here is an idea of what I want...what can I expect to spend?

CUT - Round

CLARITY - V VS1,V VS2, VS1,VS2, SI1, SI2

Band - White Gold

Is the center stone or seting more of a priority? What size does she wear?

.685 H/SI1 1688 5.68*5.7 From Dirt Cheap Diamonds is another good option and they have several more options of White Gold Settings there are several that would fit your budget with that stone, but I am not sure what your GF taste is.

OK, here''s my advice. Get the best cut you can find. After that, I''d compromise on color and clarity to get as big as possible! You will get MUCH MORE diamond for your budget with a I/J SI than you will a D/E VVS. Believe me!

I have a 2.36 J/SI2 with an incredible cut. It''s amazing. Faces up so white, and is totally 100% eyeclean. The diamonds you will find here on PS are NOT like the diamonds you will see in most mall stores. They simply do not compare!

My diamond was an upgrade from a 1.53 G/VS stone, and I have never regretted the "compromises" in size/clarity. Do people notice the J color? Or the SI clarity? No! Of course not! Do they notice the sparkle and the SIZE? Oh yeah, baby!
