Help! First Time Buyer!

Hey, everyone!

I''m a bit of a diamond novice on the verge of proposal and have come across somewhat of a dilemma.

My girlfriend -- who is rather particular with rings -- has fallen in love with the Martina setting over at BestGem.com. I was hoping to be able simply to purchase the setting without the diamond -- which I could pick up in New York almost any time -- but the site warns against this. So, two questions:

1) Can anyone clue me in as to the reliability of BestGem.com? I''d be willing to buy the diamond from them provided I understood that I was getting reliable, quality service.

2) Is it possible to have a loose stone (princess cut) set into a pre-purchased selection -- despite what the website says?

Are you sure that your girl would never consider another setting once a sparkly little princess is presented to her in some 'holder' ?

It is rather risky to start chasing a setting witout stone in hand... there might be some need to adjust it, and so forth and a few posts here recount both good and bad stories about such attempts.

Most of the settings I see at Bestgem are not really unique to them and could be sources through a jeweler... And I can't find the statement against purchasing empty setting you seem to refer to ('what the website says'). Where is it?
