hi, im trying to get an engagment ring together for my girlfriend from blue nile, its going to be a solitare setting 4 prong, with a 2.5mm band that was the easy bit now im finding it very dificult to select a diamond it cant cost anymore than 1100$ (the diamond) the diamonds ive been looking at are

http://www.bluenile.com/round-diamond-1-carat-or-less-signature-ideal-cut-e-color-vs2-clarity_LD01282908?__fun_frm=i&filter_id=0
http://www.bluenile.com/round-diamond-1-carat-or-less-ideal-cut-f-color-vs2-clarity_LD01366238?__fun_frm=i&filter_id=0
im leaning toward the signature cut diamond because of the additional AGAL report but is it really neccasary? or should i go with a cheaper ideal cut (still with excellant symetry and polish, vs2 colour d-f ? or should i try to opt for a larger diamond (.42-.44?) i definatly want the best cut symetry and polish again colour d-f

http://www.bluenile.com/round-diamond-1-carat-or-less-ideal-cut-g-color-vs2-clarity_LD01369710?__fun_frm=i&filter_id=0#grading_report will this diamond be nice? it has exc symetry and polish i really want somthing that will be very sparkley and have good fire whats the best choice? or is there somthing better

and is there a place i can view similar sizediamonds set in similar rings?

Hi Slayt,

I would recommend checking out jamesallen.com

I bought my fiance''s diamond there and I feel I got a great price as compared to other vendors including BN.

Here are a couple diamonds to consider:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1060482.asp $850 pricescope price (you''ll have to call them and mention Pricescope to get the price)
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/G-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1108039.asp $820 pricescope price

You may want to talk to your GF about diamond size. I really haven''t met a woman who preferred a smaller size diamond. She may want to go down in color and clarity to get a bigger size rock.....as her.

Hope this helps.

shes seen .5ct rings and thinks there to big, she actually thought .34ct was a good size but i wanna go a bit bigger, shes said quality is much more important than size, im also from australia so maybe women here have a bit different thoughts on what is big

im also looking at all of these, from eveerything ive read these diamonds will all be very good correct? ps im opting for for a smaller diamond as my GFS finger is quite small (size5 1/4) and i think a .5ct diamond is to big for it

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond_search.asp?AdvSearch=Search&submitType=new&track=row_mod3&elem=radio_form&filter_id=0&shape=RD&x=26&y=2

I know you might think a .50 ct. diamond is too big for her finger, but what does she think? Poking around PS, I have learned this about the differences between men and women - assuming, ideal or excellent cut quality, men always zero in on smaller, and higher colour and clarity, while women seem to search for a balance of the 2, with size having more weight (pun intended!)

This chart shoes the percentage of finger coverage for ring sizes vs. diamond mm sizes.

And, here''s a thread full of size 5 fingers and the diamonds that adorn them . . . take a look around, but especially, take a look around some of the Rocky Talky threads by women discussing size.

You were posting as I was posting. Sorry about that.

Knowing you're from Australia sheds a lot of light on the reasoning. Average diamond sizes are much smaller there than they are in the US and women aren't so size driven as they are here.

I think you're doing great to stick with a VS2 where possible, but don't discount Gs and Hs or eye-clean SI1s.

Hello fellow Aussie

The diamond you posted looks to have very similar numbers to the one my FF and I picked, but I will let someone with better knowledge then I comment on the cut quality.

The only thing I don''t like about blue nile is the lack of info/pictures and for me buying OS I found all that really comforting as returning the diamond if it not right back to the US would be a pain.

:) GL

Honestly, when I first looked at diamonds (5.25 ring size), a 0.5ct looked huge and I was considering going for a 0.4ct. I bought a 0.8ct RB and now it''s shrunk heaps, still a great size, but I am glad I didn''t go smaller. If you are still set on going for a small stone, I would definately go with a vendor that has a great upgrade policy in case it shrinks later!

Welcome, My wife has the same finger size and said pretty much the same thing. However I surprised her with .75 carat diamond and she loved it. Several years later she said her diamond has shrunk and now would love " a slightly bigger one". No worries for me as my Pricescope vendor has an upgrade policy. I would highly recommend looking at vendors who have a nice upgrade policy. Both Whiteflash and Good Old Gold have those and several other Pricescope vendors as well. Last year I bought a pair of earrings (ACA''s) from Whiteflash and paid alot less than the Blue Nile price. My wife really loves how beautifully sparkly they are. Hard to find a better cut diamonds than the ACA''s. So I would look at their selection of diamonds at Whiteflash. There are plenty of choices if you drop down in color and SI-1 clarity. If you really can''t see an inclusion with your eyes, it more or less is not there in my book. Keep looking and researching. Many people here to help you out with questions and advice.Good Luck Hunting!!!

To reiterate what a few people have said, she most likely will want an upgrade when diamond shrinkage syndrome sets in! This is one of the reasons why people tend to stay away from Blue Nile around here. BN does not have an upgrade policy. James Allen requires you to spend 2x the original price (which is great for you since you'll reach that easily!). Whiteflash and Good old Gold have more liberal upgrade policies.

My suggestion would be to go as large as possible for the budget, and set it in a simple solitaire to save money on the setting. This also means going down in color (to H-J) and maybe clarity (if you can find an eye-clean SI1 or SI2). I found a beautiful eye-clean J/SI1 that I had set in a pendant, and the stone was just over $1000. In a well-cut stone, nobody except a good jeweler will be able to tell the difference.

If you can stretch your budget just a teeny tiny but (and remember, there's a small discount for being a PSer), I would look at these:
0.54 I SI1
0.53 J VS2
0.565 I SI1
0.50 J SI1

Or these if they're eye-clean (they're within budget):
0.50 J SI2
another 0.50 J SI2

ok im thinking about this .46ct stone can someone have a look and tell me
is it eye clean? would you call it a good stone with excellant sparkle? and do you think its a great choice or can i do better? is there any thing i should know about it? to me it looks quite good can someone please tell me the ags report says theres clouds crystals and feathers? can someone have a look and tell me if there anything to worry about? will i be able to see them?

and lastly is white flashs rings the same or better than blue niles? (2.5mm band solitare)
thanks
ps there will definatly be noupgrading she will be extremely happy no matter what
thanks

slayt Can you post a link to the 0.46 stone your looking at?

No worries ;)

Definitely a very nice looking diamond but in regards to being eyeclean the best people to tell you that would be the folks at whiteflash, just make sure that when you ask that it is eyeclean to your standards, i.e from all sides close scrutiny, just be really clear with your expectations :).

I would also ask to be on the safe side that the middle cloud is not hampering the light performance, they will be very truthful with you.

but isnt the light performance excellant? (its a "0" on the page) so i should email them asking if its " from all sides close scrutiny are any of the inclusions visible?, is the cloud in the middle effecting light performance? im sort of at a loss to what i should say, how soon do they usually get back to you?

I`m also in Australia, and when we first started looking at diamonds, 0.4-0.5 seemed the perfect size (looked quite big to me on my finger). In the end we got a 0.78 princess cut from MDX, and I`m so glad we didn''t get anything smaller! Trust me, diamonds shrink quite quickly, as we tend to stare at our e-rings a lot!!

Yes, the light performance should be excellent, it is a beautifully cut ACA with an AGS0 cut grade - no worries. Just contact Whiteflash and ask them if the diamond is eyeclean at all angles and close up. They will know what you mean, and advise you if there are any inclusions that can be seen with the naked eye. They normally get back to you quickly, I have found within 24 hours usually in my experience, but if you need answers quickly, don''t be afraid to telephone them.

Ditto to what Lorelai said :) they will do generally get back to you very quickly :).

Sounds pretty, my stone is about the same size. When you get it please add it to the under one carat thread, we need more pretties over there!

I saw that the stone was still available, were you able to reserve it while you discussed it with WF?

what he sent me, its sounds good should i buy it? ive told him to reserve it for me.

The diamond is eye-clean from the top and sides. If you flip an SI1 diamond over table down on a white sheet of paper you can see inclusions but it is clean from the top

If it is eyeclean from most viewing angles to your stated preference, and you are happy, then that is great you have reserved it!

well he said it is eyeclean every angle except if you flip it upside on white paper so i assume its fine and i wont be able to tell once its set? is this still a good buy?

thanks

Looks like a winner! AGS000 means that the cloud has not affected light performance. What settings are you considering? This is my favorite setting at WF and would look beautiful if you''re getting a solitaire!
