HELP! Emerald Cut Diamond - Comments/Thoughts

Hi to everyone here. I am a new member to this site, although I have been lurking for some time. I would appreciate any comments/thoughts you guys have on the following diamond:

Hi Mark,

You can't really tell with the numbers how an EC is likely to look unfortunately, you really need photos and an Idealscope Image and ASET is also useful if you can't physically see the diamond. I would suggest perhaps checking out vendors such as Good Old Gold, Whiteflash, Engagement Rings Direct, James Allen and Wink Jones as they very often have in house diamonds which they have access to and all the information to help you make the right choice - plus their expertise which is at your disposal. Personally I wouldn't want to buy any diamond, let alone an Emerald cut without good pictures, ASET and IS images, plus also having an expert vendor to guide me. Otherwise it is pot luck whether you end up with a beautifully cut and lovely diamond or not, most likely not.

All that's missing is the picture of the steps. That is the most crucial piece of information that BN, unfortunately, does not provide. The only other concern I have is the Good symmetry. I normally like to aim for at least VGood. There is also no crown height information provided. These are reasons why I prefer to stick with vendors like Mark at ERD, Jon at GOG or WF because they provide detailed information and pictures.

OK, I know that the info I provided is not the "complete" picture, but I just wanted to know based on what info I do have if everything looked good, i.e. if H color is ok, if VS1 is ok, if the depth and the table looked ok, measurements for carat weight, etc.

H VS1 is a sweet spot for ECs. Depth is fine, not too deep and the table looks to be not too large either. But, that''s about all I can tell from the stats you posted. I cannot tell if it is well cut, is a sparkler or a dud. I can''t tell if the steps look wonky or is crisp. I can''t tell if the EC will shoot fire or not. An ASET will help to evaluate that.

I''m also looking to buy an emerald & have looked at >30 so far. I''m narrowing my choices using the info from this sight (ie depth/table 60-65, etc) Your specs are just outside of this range & the nicest diamonds I''ve looked at so far are around this general range. Magnifed & scope pics have really helped me narrow the field by looking at the steps of the cut. Even though the numbers might fit into an "ideal cut" range, you really need to see it up close to make a decision. This is probably the best info I gained from this forum & wish I had learned it earlier in the process. Good luck!

I think the specs of this diamond put it in the ballpark. I think you need to trust the recommendation of someone at the vendor if this is worth seeing or not. If the vendor has looked at it and doesn''t think it''s a dud, I think you need to look at it in person and see what you think, and maybe get an appraiser who knows ECs to give you a second opinion. The rest of the specs, IS, ASET, GemEx, etc. really don''t matter. For everyone who thinks these are important, there is someone who thinks they are useless or misleading. And when it really comes down to it and you ask specific questions about an EC, most people don''t have specific answers and will just say you have to look at an EC in person and see if it is a performer, or trust someone who can tell this.

As far as using internet vendors such as GOG, Whiteflash, Blue Nile, etc., I''m sure these are fine and good vendors. However searching at their sites they seem to be pretty much the same as local jewelers. They have few ECs, and most of what they have aren''t real great according to the specs you''ll read on this site. So you''ll have to ask them to search for stones, you''ll get conflicting and confusing opinions as to what is good, and it will come down to you trusting that your vendor has helped you pick a decent stone and confirm that you think it looks good. Anyway that''s my opinion after over a year of researching ECs (and after that time really not knowing how to pick an exceptional one).
