HELP! Diamond Pendant Advice- what shape works best?!

Ok,

So I got my wife a diamond pendant, it was a princess cut diamond and it was kite set (each corner pointed in a N,S,E,W direction) with no bale on it with a very thin white gold necklace. It was 1 carat a F colored and SI1 in clarity. Dimensions were 5.47x5.79mm

I realized after the fact that kite set was sort of goofy as the symmetry was not right for this setting, but I planned on re-setting with a halo, anyhow for her.

Anyhow, the stone seriously lacked any sparkle to it and I wound up returning it and finding an I color SI2, extremely eye-clean pear shape that is 1.33 ct. Much more sparkly. The dimensions on this are 9.54x6.24mm.

I have this in a simple basket setting with no bale and the same thin white gold necklace as before. Down the road, I do plan to halo this stone at some point and maybe incorporate another diamond or 2 atop it, perhaps a square radiant/princess set kite-style?

My question is this, does a kite set princess look as large when set diagonally, since the diagonal diameter is now the length and width of the stone? I feel like the pear, though larger overall in both L/W and carat weight looks smaller on her chest that the kite set.

Is horizontal better than vertical for a pendant as there is more width shoulder to shoulder than lower neck to chest to fill up? I do have a couple of photos for both of these pendants so that you can see for yourselves. I will include her other jewelry so maybe that can help see what see has and what is best for her?

FYI, I also happen to like clean lines and am wondering if I should return the stone and find a larger square radiant or princess and halo it? Everyone on here is always so helpful so I hope for some guidance. My wife has a rectangular radiant engagement ring with a halo and a 5 stone round ring for a wedding band. Her earrings are princess shape and she has jackets that sort of mimic the halo of her engagement ring. She sometimes wears a tennis bracelet of rounds, too, so I am not sure if another diamond shape would look too random? I would never list her jewelry, but this forum is full of such knowledgable people, I figure if you know what she has and wears, it might help.

I think you should go with whatever she prefers! I like that the kite-set princess is a little bit different and matches her stud earrings, but I also love the pear shape for a pendant, especially if it will be in a halo eventually. Does she like both equally? I think mixing and matching shapes is fun, and if she loves it, go for it.

Hmmm, well, she likes both the princess pendant set in that way and she likes the pear, too, for a pendant. I would halo either one for her (pear or a larger square stone than what I got first) since she really likes the look of a halo.

My personal vote is for the pear - it's such a classic necklace shape.

I vote for a .6ish kite set princess with a .20 round under it then the pear
below that. That should cover it!

Pear. Extremely flattering and classic. And they face up big for their carat weight. Princesses face up small for their carat weight. More bang for buck with pears.

Pear. And set a small round above it. I don't think a square goes as well as a round with a pear. Here is a nice design (it is a Penny Preville pendant)..

Like this DS? (with or without the bezel on the round).

I like the pear as well. With the halo or without.

I think the pear in your photos actually looks more prominent on your wife than the princess, and the shape is more flattering on her, too. With your question about going horizontal versus vertical with a pendant...it's usually more flattering to use a vertical direction to help lengthen the appearance the body. With your concern about having different diamond shapes, here is an idea to consider: put a halo around the pear as you have planned and put a smaller kite set princess above it. The halo around the pear will help tie-in with her halo e-ring and the jackets for her earrings. The princess on the pendant will tie-in with the shape of her earrings as well. I think that would look pretty together and more interesting than having every diamond with the same shape. I have to add that you have adorned your wife with some beautiful diamonds! Lucky lady!

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Yes, I will stick with the pear with 3 point melee. Do I tilt the halo stones or leave flat? If I incorporate a 0.6 ct kite set princess above, do I halo that as well with the 3 pointers?

I would not halo the princess. Actually if you are going to halo the pear, I might skip the
princess all together.

I think a slight angle on the halo would be flattering.

Love that, Gypsy!

I would not combine the princess with the pear.

I'm with DS. Halo plus pear plus round is very visually noisy and everything competes.

Here's an example of a pear pendant with a radiant, however, both bezel set. Do you ladies think a combination like this could work without doing a halo to help pull it together with the square shaped earrings and e-ring? I've seen some other photos with pear and princess like this necklace, but with no halo. I'm just seeing where rgh333 is coming from with having the different shaped diamonds... or should he not worry about that?

Hear's another photo of pear with princess pendant:

In the case of the first one, I think the cut corners and colored stone make that design possible because the blue stone doesn't really compete with the pear.

In the second one, there is a tiny princess above the pear (proportionally). I am fine with that when the small stone is in that proportion to the larger stone. But I'd say that he'd need maybe a .15-.20 max to achieve that kind of look with his pear. If you look at the picture Gypsy posted, the round accent stone is very small as well. So I would want either shape really small like that picture shows, personally. Very nice examples, though!

I would have put a halo around either the Princess or the Pear pendant, but not on the upper stone/stones.

I think I will stick with the Pear, for sure for her. I have all these extra stones, like 9 of 10-11 pointers and 12 of 7 pointers, that I might incorporate into the necklace or pendant somehow.

I would eventually like to add either 2 more pears that graduate to this one, or have this one be the eventual middle...not sure yet.

Lots of females I know do not like the Pear shape, for whatever reason, so I am glad I asked on here as you know much more about jewelry!
