I love the Vatche Swan ring as many do:
http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/swan-solitaire-engagement-ring-by-vatche-310.htm

I like the subtle detail on this James Allen diamond accented prong ring as well:
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/platinum-diamond-accented-prong-engagement-ring-item-8927

I saw the Swan in person except it was just the setting, no diamond, and yellow gold so I had to imagine what it would look like. I liked it very much.
The James Allen ring I have not seen in person.

The diamond is 1.68 carat, my finger is size 5, will be worn as the only ring on that hand and the setting will be platinum. I was wondering if anyone can point out some pros and cons to each setting that I have not thought of or just give your opinion. Thanks : )

I think most people on here don't love the quality of JA. Out of those 2 settings, I prefer the look of the JA.

eta - if you use the search button at the top of the forum, lots of the swans come up with more real life photos. My computer isnt cooperating and wont open any of the links, but they do show up so you can see!

I disagree that most people don't like JAs quality. They offer a wide range of rings. Some more affordable and some more expensive. The price reflects the quality.

I've said this before - the swan prongs look like a part of the male anatomy.

Once I saw that I couldn't unsee it. I bring it up only because I'd hate for you to notice it 3 months down the line and it bother you. If that doesn't bother you, then awesome!

I dont like the blob looking ends to the prongs on the JA setting. For some reason the WF Swan prongs on rings they have
completed just look a little more elegant. Its not much of a difference but it still bothers me. I vote Swan.

Perhaps it is that a lot of folks like the inexpensive settings (the french cut pave is very popular for example), and I see so many responses suggesting other brands. It just seems like its always JA that gets bumped in favour of other brands, but I can see how its just the price point.

LMAO that is too funny. I don't see that at all but thanks for making me laugh and yes it's important to mention because if I did start seeing that I would change my mind too ; )

I hadn't noticed that but now that you mention it I see what you mean. I'm not sure how it will look in real life or if it's noticeable but I see the Swan prongs have a more dainty pointed end.

Is your goal a solitaire with some diamond accidents in the head somehow?

Yes, or an interesting head with some detail, basically a solitaire with a little interest when looked at from the side.

Last I heard you could get danhov settings though JA.
There's only one soli with diamond in the head, but a lot of interesting solis

They have some nice stuff, thanks Niel. I still like my first two options best though. I want six prong too.

The Swan is probably a much nicer setting. I wouldn't like wearing it with a band but since you are planning to wear it alone, I think it would be fine. I do think it looks like an engagement ring, though.

The other one looks like it is set low and the diamond might be hard to access to clean with a brush. In fact, the Swan might be hard to access the full pavilion with a brush, too.

Have you seen Mark Morrell's Petite Torchiere? Because that is along the same lines as the Swan but more beautiful to me.

Yes I do like his rings but the prong heads bother me. They seem so big. I don't know if that is something that could be modified.
Btw it is an engagement ring. I just like wearing it as a stand alone ring so wedding band will be on the other hand.

I have my aquamarine set in the Swan (tweak the shank design a little), and love it.

Yes the aquamarine! I remember when I searched for Vatche Swan I came across your post. I have blue topaz jewelry so I found your aquamarine to be absolutely stunning. I just looked through your post again at all the pics and wow.

I've been trying and trying... but I just don't see what you mean. Can you please clarify?

How can I delicately put this (since I'm not sure if the site's word monitoring system would permit me to use the biologically correct term):
think of the rear view of the often-photographed Charging Bull statue in lower Manhattan
