Hello All,

I am posting once again - still lookin for my cushion. I viewed a diamond today in with a jeweler that looked to be very nice. THe GIA cert was just sent to me and I needed to run this by you all to see what you think.

2.70 carat - Cushion Brilliant
F color - I know that is great!
VS2 clarity - not problem here
8.95 X 7.90 X 5.40mm (I calculated L/W ration at 1.13, if I did that right) -what do you all think of this?
Polish/ Symmetry - VG/Good
Culet - very small
53 table
68.4 depth
No Flourescence
Girdle - "thin to extremley thick" - THIS IS THE PART THAT IS WORRING ME THE MOST. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS?? PLEASE RESPOND ASAP.

No other information other then GIA is available. Jeweler said cut was very good??? Nothing in writing though.

It depends on where the thin portion is; perhaps it is where a prong might be able to protect it. Do you have an idealscope or ASET to check for light performance? Are you able to take a picture of it to post here? A cushion cannot be judged by the numbers alone so pictures would be very helpful.

I looked through an ASET scope and saw red/green. First time I used the thing and really did not know much about it - other then was looking for white spots - which I did not see to much of that. What about the thickness - is that a problem. I just asked via email about where is was thin at and asked if there was more info. Doubt they have anything else?? Did everything else look okay. Diamond appeared very large - compared it to a 3 carat radiant and the measurements on the cushion were bigget. The 2.70 cushion measured and looked larger then a 3 carat radiant. Could this be because of the thin girdle??

No, the girdle would not have such a large effect. Most likely the radiant is overly deep, thus facing up smaller.

I searched the internet for thin to ext. thick girdle. Actually, the thin part of it is not really the biggest problem as there are two categories under "thin" ,,,,,,,the first being extremely thin and very thin. Thin was listed as excellent on girdle size chart. It sounds like the real issue is the extremley thick part of the girdle. Talks about dead weight at the botton. This diamond is a 2.70 carat with measurements of 8.95 x 7.90 x 5.40 mm and a l/w ratio of 1.13( if I calculated it correctly). The stone seemed to look large when put next to a 2.02 and a 2.35 carat,

DO THE MEASUREMENTS, L/W RATIO LOOK OKAY FOR A STONE SIZE OF 2.70? I AM CONFUSED ABOUT THICK GIRDLE AND DEAD WEIGHT ISSUE.....WHEN THE STONE SEEMED TO LOOK OK AT A 2.70 WHEN I VISUALLY LOOKED AT IT. QUESTION - HOW COULD THERE BE DEAD WEIGHT WHEN THE MEASUREMENTS AND THE COMPARISON TO SMALLER STONE LOOKED GOOD. COULD IT MAYBE BE EXTREMLEY THICK IN A VERY SMALL PORTION OF THE GIRDLE, AND REALLY NOT A CONCERN. WHAT REPORT WOULD I NEED TO SEE IN ORDER TO GET MORE INFO ON THIS ISSUE?

Looking for some feedback as we have a deposit on this stone and I need to advise the jeweler if it is not a keeper and then he could maybe find me something else.

1) 1.13 is slightly retangular cushion (still pretty square) which are nice proportions if you like that shape. I certainly like stones with that ratio.

2) A 3 CT Stone with L/W 1.13 Ratio with a thin to slightly thick girdle I viewed had dimensions 8.95 X 7.94 so your stone is not significantly smaller looking faceup because of the girdle.

3) If you want a stone that has a bigger faceup appearance you might try to search for stones with a depth of 64 - 67 which would have bigger face up appearances and probably would not be too shallow to show the chunky facets. (They may
be more expensive though). Do not overemphasize the hidden weight in the girdle affect as its minor in cushions compared to the depth of the stone.

4) An Extremely thick girdle though might affect light performance so take a look if you like the brightness of the stone if that satisfies you than there is no problem with the girdle.
If you ordering this stone site unseen and have to pay for it beforehand get an ASET image first and post it here and myself or others can tell you if its a stone which will have a bright appearance.
A thin girdle is nothing to worry about(very thin might be worrysome) ideal girdles are medium or often in cushions thin to slightly thick so that is pretty normal.

With cushions the specs really don't tell you how bright the stone will be so make sure you have the right to send the stone back and won't pay much of a penalty (maybe only return shipping) if the stone isn't as bright as you would like.

The thin part isn't the problem, it is potentially the variance between thin and ex thick, although you do see this in fancy shapes. Thin to medium, thin to slightly thick would be preferable. Depending on how much of the girdle the ex thick part covers, this can potentially waste carat weight.

Ask if you can view the diamond away from the store lights to see how you like it in plain daylight.

Hey All,

The jeweler sent me this photo to view. He assured me that this was a beautiful diamond and that he feels comfortable selling me this piece as the girdle thickness is very minimal and in one small area. I cannot tell anything from the photo? Not sure what I am looking at. He has not other reports. I have one other pic of the front that I will try to post. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks Lorelei and chuckcushionlover for your feedback - really appreciate it.

Glad to help! What you could do to get some peace of mind is to make the sale final on the diamond checking out with an independant appraisal, get this in writing and make sure the seller has a solid return policy

Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area

Lorelei - the diamond is from Mark @ ERD. He seems very reputable on this site. When we met with him he seemed very trustworthy - super nice guy. The dimensions on the diamond are more in line with a 3 ct diamond. Don''t know if that has anything to do with any of this?? He said - he knows how important this purchase is for me and my husband (10 yr wedding anniversary upgrade) and would not sell me anything that was not of quality. I am just nervous because this is a very big purchase for us - and do not want to make a mistake. He has a setting we like also...wanted to have him start to make the ring (if the diamond is a go).

Ok, no concerns with Mark, you are in excellent hands!

Thanks so much for your reponse back. Really appreciate it. Husband did give a deposit as someone else wanted the diamond. He sent another stone to David Atlas appraiser in Philadelphia for me - quality was wonderful. Just did not want to go with that stone as looked smaller then carat weight - was a 2 ct - looked like a 1 ct. Went to his office in NY - beautiful diamonds he had!!! When we saw the one posted here - we really loved it. The size was bigger then I ever thought that I would get - LOL.

I feel better from the feedback of you all.

WIll post pics when the ring is complete.

THanks, Again
