Help! Could I have just knocked an inclusion out of my diamond?

Hello,

I just started reading about inclusions because my boyfriend proposed over the weekend, giving me a lovely ring with lots of family history. And yes, it was exceedingly romantic - beside a lovely waterfall in the White Mountains as we rested from hiking. He mentioned that the stone (which seems to have a lovely cut, and seems surprisingly large to my eyes) has a "major" flaw. My immediate response was "Don''t we all?". It is just "so" him, and I''m honored that he would give me something with so much family history in it. The setting was his mother''s mother''s, but the central diamond fell out and was lost in the 1920''s or 1930''s. The diamond that now resides in the setting was from his father''s family, and the notes his parents left him regarding the ring''s history mentions the "flaw". This worried him that the stone might be unstable, so he wants to have it checked out by a jeweler to make sure the setting is secure, the stone is secure, and we should probably have it sized up a little as it is wearable, but just a tad too tight on my finger.

Anyhow, I learned about inclusions here, and came to the conclusion that this stone has a cloud like inclusion, which can only be seen from certain angles in certain lights. It appeared as a contained diffuse white oval, midway through the depth and sort of to the side of the stone.

But today, after only TWO DAYS of wearing it, I clunked it against something this morning, and now the inclusion seems to be more dim, and has a fanned out shape, and worst of all, there seems to be a dark marking very close to the top central "plateau" cut area. I am VERY certain this dark area was NOT there before - I examined it pretty closely, and from all angles, trying to figure out what the inclusion was. This little dark patch WAS NOT THERE Before! And the distinctive white oval is not clearly visible.

At first, I thought I''d gotten something ON the stone - I''ve scraped my watch against things, and what appeared to be scratches in the watch glass easily came off with a bit of acetone on a Q-tip. I tried to do that with this, but it didn''t come off. It appears to be INSIDE the stone. I looked at it closely with a magnifying glass (probably 5x) and the angles of the cuts are still clear and do not appear chipped.

WHAT have I done? Should I take it to a jeweler immediately?

What are the questions I should ask someone to make sure they''ll do the best by this sentimentally important stone? I''m such a newbie - is there a certification to WORK on diamonds?

Thank you VERY MUCH for any information you can give me!
-Jane

A few things come to mind:

1. It could be dirt trapped UNDER the stone in the setting. Try scrubbing underneath with a toothbrush and some dishsoap.
2. Is it possible that this stone was later replaced with a fracture filled/enhanced diamond? That could account for it as these stones are notoriously unstable.
3. I guess it is possible that the inclusion got bigger when you thwacked it, but from what I have read it seems very unlikely. But if it was big enough I guess it is possible...

The best thing to do is to take it into a TRUSTED jeweler or appraiser and find out. We can only speculate...

Ditto and try not to panic, get an expert to take a look, it may not be as bad as you think or even damaged.
