Hi, I'm new here and looking for some guidance in picking a diamond and even open to suggestions on settings. I'm picking the ring out and I know she wants yellow gold, so aside from that the rest is up to me. Done some research and looking for options/opinions from experts on this. So far I have this setting..
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/18k-Yellow-Gold-Round-Raised-Engagement-Ring.html

with this diamond http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1527144.asp

The diamond was recommended by James Allen CS, not sure if the hearts & arrows cut is worth it...

So just looking for any opinions, I'm even open to buying Used/looking at other vendors... My budget is around $2500 for everything.

Thanks for the help.

I like this one

Scores like a .6 on the HCA scace, and Itll be ok I think being an I because its in YG, and its got great clarity

I like a thinner band if your diamond is that size, just because It'll visually make the diamond bigger than a larger band

I dont think you need to go H&A at that size

I like the second one, I think I like the look of a little thicker band.

I'm closer to $3000 now but I'm looking at doing something like this now.

Thanks for the help so far, any other suggestions are welcome.

That stone doesnt score very well on the HCA calculator.

you would want it to be under 2. Youd get that info off the GIA report. also I think an F is a really high color, you can probably go lower, especially sense yellow gold will make it look lighter in comparison.

I still like the one I posted but I can understand why you wouldnt want an I (though i still think it would be fine) but you could go down to an H, those are still colorless.

I love that Scroll-Basket Pave!!!

I think a thinner band will look much better with a diamond of that size. It will allow the stone to stand out more, rather than just sort of blending in with the band. I really like this setting:

The first one that JulieN posted would look great too!

I like that one a lot, thanks for the suggestions. So I want to spend like 1500 max on a diamond, any suggestions there? Also, if there is any other vendors were that my money might go a little further let me know, or even a used ring.

Actually after looking at that setting, the minimum carat has to be a .75 so that probably won't work in my budget.

Thanks.

that diamond is PS wire price 1566, which I know is over 1500, but really only slightly

You could contact ID jewelry, see what they have to offer. If you tell them you want a price scope quality melee it your ring and your budget ive heard they are great with a budget. Also I would ask one of the online people at JA directly what skinnier pave band they have for a .5 ct stone

3000 is a good budget. Would you/she be open to an antique/vintage piece?

I love the idea of an oval stone. They're so elegant and give you so much bang for your buck in terms of size on the finger!

Yea, I like the diamond you linked... I was a little worried about the color as I would prefer a nicer cut/color etc. over carat size, but I'm guessing the I diamond wouldn't have much of a noticeable yellow tint? Just need to find a good band for it, i'm not quite sure if I like the real skinny bands, even if it makes the diamond look bigger.

Haven't thought about the emerald or oval options, nor read into them... thanks again for all the help and suggestions. Been looking at every ones inputs and trying to get this figured out,

You'll be fine with I color, no worries.

So I came back to this.. I really like the second link but it looks like with a decent .70 carat diamond it would be around $3400 or so... little more than I want to spend.

So maybe the one in the first link and using $1500-2000 for the diamond.

I saw this on GOG. Little more for the stone yes but they sell Gabriel and co settings , they have a plain shank halo there for 800. As wells as lots of settings under 1000, or even 800 if you'd consider going with a plain solitaire

You want to make sure that the setting doesn't override the stone. You really want the stone to be the star and I would always want to put more money in the stone than in the setting.

James Allen's staff will analyze 3 for you to help you make a choice, so pick a couple others.

I like these: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds-search/?View=4&Tab=3&Comparison=1539637,1536400,1500126

I ended up ordering this one out of your suggestions
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1539637.asp

I emailed JA and that one was recommended. I'm hoping the J won't be bad, I was surprised they recommended the cheapest one out of the bunch.

Thanks for the help.

Excellent, that was one of my favorites. Please post pics in "Show Me the Bling!"
