i originally wanted a beautiful micropave halo in 18k wg, but having spent an extra $1000 on the stone i'm trying to find a cheaper alternative elsewhere in 14k wg. the vendor originally suggested that maybe i should just stick to a tiffany 6 claw style setting, but i had my heart set on a halo :(sad

my concern with these ones it that they don't look as refined from the side profile. is that going to be a problem?

let me know if you like any of them, or think eurghhh gross.

ps the centre stone is 6.89x6.91 in size ::)

Style 2!

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

I would get the plain Tiffany style and upgrade later to the Halo :))

BIG ditto! Don't waste money on less than a fine quality halo. You will regret it later. The difference between 14k and 18k is not all that much anyway, but I would want great quality workmanship for an e-ring setting.

I agree. What is your budget for the halo setting? Maybe we can find a suitable alternative that does fall in budget?

Thritto!

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

I actually really like the second and third, especially if you have a good bench who could thin out the prongs and make them pointy (my preference:-)

I would check-out ID jewelry for an affordable halo (these settings might be from there?) they have great prices and many Psers have been thrilled with their service! if you can get a halp setting you like for just a little more than a tiff-style setting that you don't like as much, even if you upgrafe the halo later, I think you'll like it more in the short-term (adn then you can get an inexpensive gemstone to set in this first halo when you upgrade :Up_to_something: )

Fourth-o!

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

I would rather have a simple but well made ring than a more elaborate one that wasn't so well made.

Also you have your heart set on a halo but does your gf? she's the one thats got to love it. There is also a reason that the Tiffany solitaire style is the most popular ring the world round > its classically beautiful and what 9/10 women want.

Also where did you get your stone? Often the stone vendor will do a good deal on a setting bought from them too. That might save you a few $'s

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

yes a halo is what i want (since i'm the girl haha)

i'm talking to the vendor now to see what options they have. even if i hadn't spent more on the stone i wouldn't have been able to buy something like leon mege or anything. but at least i would have been able to definitely buy one from a reputable vendor. right now i'm looking at $500-1000 on the setting, with less being best.

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

You're going to have a hard time finding a high quality halo in your pricerange. Bevererly K makes some lovely halo rings but the closest halo I found was $1400.. Pearlmans is offering Holiday cards for 20% off so that would put this ring at $1120, so still over budget just a touch but maybe doable if you like it?

I'd say buy the least expensive solitaire you can and put the rest in a savings account. Then you can save up until you can get what you really want. Sometimes you can find great deals on quality settings that are pre-loved, making them more affordable, if you are open to that...

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

i'm contemplating going to a local asian jeweller so i can eyeball the settings myself. that might be a cheaper option!

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

you can always have a look. With pave though you really do get what you pay for. I'd study up so you can know exactly what characteristics to look for as an indicator of quality.. these are only the tip of the iceberg but at least a start...

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

I would go with something simple now and upgrade to what you REALLY want, when you can afford it. The diamond won't get any older (hahahaha!) but you will know exactly what it is you love and have a bit more to spend on it, if you wait till you've got the $$$ for your dream setting.

Don't rush - the money saved won't be worth it. My DH says all the time (and it drives me crazy cuz he's usually right... :x ) but "you get what you pay for".

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

I actually like the idea of a solitaire now, and halo later - stick with the solitaire till the "DSS" kicks in, and then go halo crazy!

Think of it this way, if you get everything now, what do you have to look forward to, say, on the one year anniversary?

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

Where are you located?

I was at Joe Escobar in Campbell CA, and they had a BEAUTIFUL plain shanked halo -- similar to my ring, but with an even prettier profile, for sale for 880 in 14K. It was slightly cushiony and make for a round.

Let me see if I can find the pics. If you like it you can call Erik and see if they can work with you long distance-- they are PS friendly and aware so it might be worth it.

Gypsy, that setting is beautiful. I wished I lived on the West Coast.

I'm in agreement with pregcurious- Gypsy has found an amazing setting :appl:
It was all her hard work at her 'blingathon'!!

Re: help choosing a cheaper setting cuz i've blown the budge

I was actually going to suggest Eternity Diamonds for your setting. Alot of PS-ers have used them and been very happy with their work (you can do a search and see some examples). I also think the setting Gypsy suggested (Escobar) is gorgeous. Good luck!

The one I had in there was 6mm but it had a bit of room-- I don't know if it has a full mm of room. Maybe they can order one for you for the right size center? Hope it works out!
