Help! Boyfriend in need of assistance! 1.2 D vs. 1.5 G.

Hello everyone,

I am getting ready to propose, and am in the process of ring shopping. My girlfriend wants a round brilliant solitaire with platinum setting. My question is, slightly bigger vs. better quality? All other factors being generally equal, here are the two options:

D color, 1.2ct

or

G color, 1.5ct

Both are clean SI2, Excellent cut diamonds. The D diamond also has excellent symmetry and polish. Not sure of the G stone. I''m just not sure which way to go. Her ring size is in the 6-6.5 range, and she wants a thin setting. I''d love to hear any/all thoughts.

Also, if anyone has any awesome, simple, classy, thin solitaire settings that they love, I''d love to see them. Thanks!

I tried on a bunch of solitaire settings recently and I loved slightly bigger diamonds (1.5-2.0) with the thin band solitaire settings, and slightly smaller diamonds with a slightly thicker band solitaire setting (1.5 and under). I found also that color didn''t matter to me too much, as long as it was G or better, but this is a matter of personal preference and color tolerance. Many people love the I''s and J''s, and like the warmth that the color adds.

My vote for you would be go with the 1.5 G if you are going with a thinner setting. Just my personal preference....

Coming from a girl who wears a size 6, i would tell you that both diamonds are HUGE, you couldn''t go wrong with either.....I think both colors are Icy white, as long as the cut is superb on both then i say go for whichever makes her heart sing and since you asked about settings, I love this http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Solitaire/Classic-tiffany-style-Knife-Edge_1137.htm I just think this setting is so romantic and beautiful in every way. If it were me, i''d go for the diamond that is most budget friendly.....

I think D is overkill. G and better in an excellent or ideal cut is usually "white" to most people''s eyes however some of the grading companies are softer with their grading, AGS and GIA more strict.

to be short and sweet: 1.5 G !!! size matters. if all other criteria are equal/very close to your criteria, definitely go bigger.

1.5 carat G for sure! But just make sure it''s ideal cut. And find out if it''s GIA or AGS and what all the numbers are! The experts around here will let you know!

Go with the bigger one. G is not a D, but it's still near colorless.

Most people forget the specifics of their diamonds down the road, but they never forget how big it is!

Yes, they are both GIA. And Mrs. W., I know she loves the Tiffany setting, but I also know she is not sure whether she likes the 4 or 6 prong. Man, this is tough to do and keep it a secret!

Well, i would say go with the 6 prong bc your gf said she likes the tiffany setting and thats what the authentic tiffany rb solitaire has also, a 6 prong offers more protection to the diamond vs a 4 prong setting. I personally like the 6 prong better, as long as the prongs are not huge and take away from the diamond. Ditto Mrs W, the original Tiff setting is 6 prongs, and I agree with more security on a stone that size.

I would reserve judgement until I saw the IS images etc. But if you think your gf is a size girl, then go for the G, IF they are both equally well cut. Do you have links to these stones?
