A few months ago DH and I upgraded my engagement ring and purchased a diamond and setting from a reputable local jeweler. They set the stone, the setting looks great and off we went. The SA said that he would mail me the original GIA report so that I could obtain insurance on the ring. I have not received the report yet.

Long story short - I''ve been laid up with a leg injury for about 12 weeks now so I just managed to make it back to the store this past weekend. The woman I spoke to said she''d have it in the mail for me. This was not the SA that we worked with.

Well, I got some papers from them today - an "appraisal" by the owner of the store, but no GIA report. When we purchased the (loose) diamond I was given the report number and have looked it up on the GIA website - so I know that one exists.

Also, the appraisal done by the store does not match the GIA report. The carat weight is off by 5 points, and the girdle measurement is a bit more general. The cut is also listed as "very good" on the owner''s report and "excellent" on the GIA report.

What should I do? Is it normal to not receive the original report and I''m overreacting? Can I request the report directly from the GIA?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

If you have the certificate number of the GIA grading then at least you know they have one, but then you have to ask them if that diamond matches the GIA they are talking about. If you arent in to getting it independantly appraised then I would call up the store to tell them youve waited long enough (escalate do whatever you need to) and demand they send it to you ASAP. Otherwise I would discuss the possibility of wanting to return the ring if they cannot prove to you the diamond they sold you is in fact the one with the GIA cert. If it still sounds like they are stalling then perhaps getting an independant appraisal is in your best interest.

Sorry to hear about your leg injury. No, this is not normal. You should have received the report when you purchased the stone or 2/3 wks later at the most. Since you have been working with the SAs, I would speak with the owner directly. He/She may not be aware you didn''t receive the report. I would also request a new appraisal. Good luck.

Good advice above. It is possible the supplier of the diamond still has the report but this is getting absurd. Contact the manager of this store ASAP.

*UPDATE*

I called the store back and spoke with the same lady. They were not aware that I didn''t receive the original GIA report upon purchasing the stone and it came in the mail today - same report that I looked up. I''ll be looking into an independent appraisal of the ring in the future but at least now I can get the ball rolling on getting some insurance for my beauty.

Thank you for your help!

Great news!

Great to hear you resolved the problem. Good luck with your leg issue.

As for the difference between the appraisal by the store and the lab report. I would bet the store appraiser did not have the info from the lab report. If this were the case, the appraiser would have to determine the weight of the mounted stone by formula. This process has inherent inaccuracies.

You should have been given the original GIA document if it was sold as a GIA graded stone. Ring up the store and ask them about it. Since the appraiser is the seller, they presumably were aware that it was GIA graded (or at least should have been aware) and it was an error to be estimating the weight and such. Ask them to correct the appraisal to include the information from GIA unless they are taking the position that the GIA info is either wrong or inapplicable.
