Hello Cushion Experts,

I just found out about this website from some friends and wanted to get your thoughts before I purchase a ring for my soon to be fiance. I am looking at two square shaped G VS2 two carat diamonds. I could really use your input....

The first is a "cushion brilliant" with great chunky optics, cut almost to the specifications of a square hearts and arrows with just a tiny bit of light leakage. It faces up like a true G, and is .2mm larger than the other cushion I am considering.

The second is a "cushion modified brilliant" with spectacular optics, with a modern cut that is very symmetrical and has almost no light leakage. It faces up like an F, and is .2 mm smaller than the first diamond.

They are both so nice I have no clue which to choose or how to base my decision....

Thanks for helping out a lost soul!

You have seen them-we haven''t. Nothing that we can tell you other than to use your eyes and pick the one that speaks to you the most.

I like chunks. So I''d go with the first one.

Yes, both are GIA graded Canadian diamonds.

the chunky one looks like this: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5770/

the more modern one looks like this: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5301/

These are not the actual diamonds (in terms of stats) but they do a good job of representing what visual differences there are between the two.

My eyes tell me that both are awesome

Do you have the stats for these stones?

ETA: Also, the ones you showed both look like 4 main pavillions so not too much difference there. I have seen 4 main pavillion cushions listed as Cushion Brilliant and Cushion Modified Brilliant. Personally I would go with the one with less leakage :)

In that case, compare both away from the store lights if possible and see which looks best in plain daylight where the ring will normally be worn.

I am guessing you are referring to the diamonds I am looking at, and not the ones in the GOG links...so yeah I do. Not sure they help paint a clear picture but, here they are:

Cushion Brilliant
2.01 G VS2
7.62 x 7.45 x 5.15
VG Polish
G Symmetry
No Flour
59% Table
69.1% Depth
Medium to Thick Faceted Girlde
No Culet

Cushion Modified Brilliant
2.06 G VS2
7.44 x 7.35 x 5.05
EX polish
VG Symmetry
No Flour
55% Table
68.7% Depth
Very Thin to Thick Faceted Girlde
No Culet

These cushions are deeper than the ideal numbers I have been reading about, but the optics on both are really spectacular (if you go by Jon''s standards at GOG).

I would get an expert to check out the diamond with the very thin girdle to make sure it isn''t any kind of durability issue. The diamond could well be fine but it is best to check in these cases.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5770/ is my favorite. I like the chunky look and the aset looks nicer than the other one to me.

I wouldn't worry about the depth. Mine is 68.3% and it is a fireball. If they both look good to you in person but you had to choose I would pick #2 even though it is a *tiny* bit smaller. It has EX polish and VG Sym AND a smaller table. *MOST* of the colorful sparkles come from the perimeter of the table in cushions. You can see this in the Fire & Sparkle section of this video from GOG: GOG cushion video Just look at where all the rainbow colors are concentrated. I didn't really notice this until I owned my own cushion because when you first look at them they are so sparkly anyway, but most of the rainbow colors come from the area surrounding the table so if the table is smaller it will sparkle even more :)

ETA: This is assuming they are both 4 pavillion main stones like the GOG comparison stones. Are the plots on the GIA the same?

I would pick one just because it is a Cushion Brillant. However, none of us can really say until we see the photos! Both diamonds have specs that are acceptable (although I would be worried about the girdle on Diamond 2).

What does a thin girdle imply? Is it more breakable? I know that having a more even girdle is preferable (like diamond number 1) but should this be a full on deciding factor?

Thanks!

I''m not an expert but here is a thread where the experts chime in about an "Extremely thin" girdle: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/very-thin-girdle-a-nono.23456/

Thanks Vgirl17 that was very helpful...Also your comment about the small table= more sparkle was really insightful.

I just went back to make a final decision and did opt for that stone, because it did have the better optics of the two (although both were sick for cushions).

I think I am ok with the "very thin" girlde because my girlfriend wants a halo, so the bezel should protect the stone.

Thanks for everyone''s help. I am so happy with my decision.
