hello all greetings from ireland :)

i have been reading a lot of threads here with great interest, so thank you all for sharing your knowledge.

i hope to ask my beautiful girlfriend to marry me soon, we have looked at rings and talked about what she would like in anticipation of getting engaged (we are together 8 years now

), and i know this particular style of ring would really suit her and she would love it.

i hope to propose and the bring her to new york ( a city we love) on a surprise trip and goto tiffany to buy the ring.

now this ring is towards the top of my budget (based on the guideline price parameter), is this price an absolute bottom price, and will the ring cost a lot more in reality? if so it could be an issue.

ive read the many posts about buying your own diamond and having it set etc but i dont want to take the romance out of it, and with the $ so weak against the euro i am happy that i will be making a good saving at any rate.

can anyone tell me what carat diamond i am likely to get for $15k and how much realistically i need to spend to get a ring that looks like the one pictured.

thank you

Hi and welcome,

honestly, you''re best bet for accuate tiffany pricing info is tiffany. i would call them. they will give you pricing over the phone. I''d go with and I, VS 2 from tiff''s in order to get the largest center stone possible.

You ought to email Tiffany and find out what exactly can you get for the low end of the price range. And keep in mind that just because they say it''s available at that price it doesn''t mean if you walk into a Tiffany store unannounced that they would have one there. You''d have to order it in advance in the correct size.

You could probably do better to purchase a beautiful stone and have it set. Good Old Gold is located in NY. EngagementRingsDirect.com is in NY on 5th Ave. Leon Mege, custon designer who specialized in pave is also in NY. so you have other options. However, some gals really want a Tiffany and the name is very important. Good luck.

Ditto mrssalvo''s and swingirl''s advice. Definitely call them and definitely set up an appointment in advance of your visit so you are guaranteed to have a few options within your budget from which to choose. Congrats and good luck! I think it''s a lovely gesture and a wonderful adventure for you both.

My guess is that you are looking at a diamond in the center that weighs just under a carat for the starting price. Now, if you go in the solitaire direction, you could be a nice 1 carat diamond for that price.

Hi, I''m in Dublin and we got our ring in Tiffanys in NY last year. We got a lucida, 1.23ct, I, VVS2 for roughly $14300 including tax. The best thing to do is email them and tell them your budget and they will email you back different specs on different diamonds and their prices. I also gave them some specs of diamonds that I''d like to see and they ordered some rings into the store so that there would be more choice when I arrived.

When the BF and I went ~Jan, we did not look at the one you are referring to, but we looked at the channel set.
We scratched it off the list just b/c I didn''t like the fact that the band was made thicker after a certain carat weight and they would not put a larger stone with the thinner band. Just to help you with general Tiffany prices, this is how much it was a few months ago, so maybe that will help you gauge how much you could get for your money.

1.53 G VS1 with 10RB diamonds .35? something or other $26,800.... something like that for this http://www.tiffany.com/Engagement/Item.aspx?sku=22135856 It was a gorgeous stone and VERY sparkly!

Loved the stone, didn''t love the band for me.

Bee and Kalypso''s numbers are still accurate. When I was at Tiffany this weekend, the S/A told me that one could get a 1.5 center stone (in whatever shape) for starting around $22K and ranging up to about $35K depending on the color and clarity. He has worked there for almost 20 years, so he knows his stuff.

That ring starts at $15,800 but I''m not sure how large of a center stone you get for that much. It looked small to me in the store - probably around half-carat. Your best bet is to call or email them to get the specs for the lowest price stone for that setting. Their phone customer service is great.

I called and checked last month when I was trying to decide what to buy for myself. Here is what I got:

Lucida 1.6 I VVS1 24,000
1.5 G VS2 24,000
1.52 F VS2 28,600

Novo 1.23 G VVS1 19,700
1.54 G VS1 27,500
1.66 F VS1 32,000
1.52F VS2 27,900

If you have your heart set on Tiffany''s, then go ahead with it because their rings are beautiful. I still have a soft spot for the Lucida cut. But if you are going to be in N.Y. then there are loads of other designers that you should look at.

I got a very good discount at Harry Winston that made it somewhat comparable to Tiffany''s prices so it''s worthwhile looking into. I''ve heard that Cartier will give a price adjustment as well. I got a quote for the Ballerina EC with specs of 1.51, G, VS2 for 35,000. Still, I feel that you can get better color from HW for about the same or less (depending on your negotiation skills.)

Good luck on your search!

Tiffany''s prices are a little higher than normal jewelry stores, but their service is superb. Make sure you let them know what''s important to you. Like whether you care more about size vs. quality. They will definately guide you in the right direction. Are you planning to propose to her in NY?

thanks for all the replies

i suppose first port of call is tiffany then! maybe its going to be a non runner but better find out now!

i may propose in nyc, but if i organise a surprise visit to nyc im sure her suspicions will be piqued!
