Help a newbie: Emerald Cut and Ring

Well the long and short of it is I''m trying to put together an engagement ring for my girl and trying to do it right.

So here''s what I know:

1) She perfers emerald cut diamonds

2) Ring would be white gold or platinum (Need advice on this)

3) Looking for a solitare with french baguette accents

4) Looking to peak out at about $5000

What I''m trying to find out:

1) What is the size of the main stone I should be looking for? (She has fairly small hands, I''ll add in her ring size when I find it out)

2) Advice on the rock itself. I''ve begun looking on bluenile.com and am a little lost.

3) Advice where to look for rings, and types of settings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Size, at least 3/4 ct. I know this is over your budget, but it should look something like this: yummy

Rings, check it out at Whiteflash, Dvatche, Pearlman''s Jewelers (lots of designers,) Leon Mege, and Mark Morrell.

French baguette is something you eat.

These all just turned out to be high colors/high clarities, but some of these look like potentially good stones.

Thanks for the responses. Two changes, 1 her ring size is a 5 and two after some looking I''ve decided to increase my budget to the $6k to $8k range.

Do you have any pictures of the stones?

Also, those are square emeralds, rather than traditional emerald cuts.

FWIW, I'm a size 4.75 with a .71 Asscher (Generic square emerald cut).

From the numbers I really only like the first one. It''s spot on with depth and and symmetry and polish. Table is a little small, but that could be really nice. We need pics ... an IS and a side view pic for crown height (if you don''t have that information available). The only issue I can really see is the L/W ratio. This is a very square stone. It''s not an asscher... but it is a 1.05 ratio. You have to see it to determine if youlike that. Spread is good for a square stone.

Second one is too deep, so your losing spread-- could still look nice to the eye... BUT it''s got only good symmetry, which is usually bad in EC''s.

Number three is pretty good, except the symmetry of it which is only good. I would ask for at pic of it though.

Is there a reason you are picking reallly fat square stones? Longer L/W ratios make emeralds look bigger. I would personally shoot for 1.3-1.45 L/W ratio if I really wanted an EC.

Still fat so it''s not quite 7x5 but definitely an EC NOT a square. Price is great, numbers are solid. Color and Clarity are the right combo for great value. Check if eye clean. But I would get a pic of this one.

If they have a good return policy... go for it. The numbers are good though. Really good. Can''t wait to see it. And remember, if you are looking at it and you love it... that''s all that matters.

Read through their return policy to make sure the return policy is 100% hassle free since you can''t get the picture prior to its purchase. I hope it looks as great in person as it does on paper.
