Hello Everyone,

My wife's birthday is in June and our son is also a June baby and she is due any day now with our second son who will also be a June baby. That said, I'd like to get her a platinum ring with 3 Alexandrite stones. I've opted for Chatham lab created stones due to my budget. I'm working with my local jeweler who I purchased engagement / wedding rings from and I want to make sure I feel good about the price he is quoting me. We've negotiated the price down to $1439 + tax (with lifetime cleaning polishing). The jeweler will be buying the ring from Adwar and the stones from Stuller (links below).

The ring is .27 ounces of platinum, which translates to about $400 of "metal cost" using a market price of $1500 per ounce (unsure if that is even useful). I have found online sites that would sell me the stones about $337.

All that said, should I feel good about paying $1439 for this item? All my jeweler has to do is order the ring and stones, mount them and turn around and sell to me. I just want to make sure that I'm getting a good price. I really appreciate any feedback.

Sincerely,

Charlie

I think you'll have to ask the mods to move your thread over to Lab Grown Diamonds section, as we're not allowed to discuss lab created stones on RockyTalky. You can use the Report Concern button

Oh and congratulations on your second son, it must be exciting!

Thank you, and my apologies for posting in the wrong section, I'll try to use that feature to request a post move.

To clarify, we do not allow discussions of lab-grown gemstones at this time, so please limit the discussion to pricing about the setting. Thank you for your cooperation.

Setting-wise, the Adwar mount is apx 5 grams of platinum - and your jeweler will have to mount all three stones and "finish" the ring. For comparison, WhiteFlash's lowest price for any platinum three-stone setting is $1795, and Brian Gavin Diamond's lowest price for any platinum three-stone setting is $1575 - and these prices do not include stone-setting costs.

Based on the above, I think the total price your jeweler suggested is reasonable... but if I were you I'd make sure I saw several of the jeweler's finished rings to confirm his skill level matches your expectations (even and well-finished prongs, setting polished well inside shank and within trellis area, etc.)
