Hello all,

I''m in search for an engagement ring for my girlfriend.

So right now I''m going with a custom ring that I have asked whiteflash to give me a quote on it. It will be for a marquise diamond. The design will be a knife edge topline, a verragio paradiso 3047r gallery setting, and I was hoping to get a halo with a north south setting.

Now talking to whiteflash and for my budget one of the ladies suggested this diamond to me. http://www.whiteflash.com/marquise/Marquise-cut-diamond-32378.htm

She is so confident that this diamond is beautiful and eye clean from any inclusions. I never really wanted to go as low as an si2.

My tough decision is that my girlfriend never asked for the halo setting. And I know that I can save roughly $600 if I don''t get that and just get a more expensive and cleaner diamond.

I need some advice and help as I want to purchase her dream ring by the end of this week.

Thank you

Are you set on gettting a marquise? Because the marquise cut is going to save you a lot of money anyway over a round brilliant. A comparable 1 ct. round ACA on WF is over $5,000. See here: http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-906718.htm I have always had a mental block about SI2''s too, but if the diamond is truly eye-clean, then that will also save you money.

The only thing I would be wary of is getting a custom design unless your GF wants it. Can you show her the diamond first, them discuss settings with her? Custom designs are not returnable, so you want to be sure she loves it. Diamonds are usually shipped in temporary tension settings, so she can see the diamond on her hand, although those settings aren''t meant to be worn. Then she can decide if she wants a halo.

I can''t speak to the quality of the stone since I know very little about marquise cuts. But if you want a bigger stone for the money, I''d go a little lower in color (to H-I). The clarity is no problem as long as it''s eye-clean...why pay for higher clarity when your naked eye can''t tell the difference?

As for the setting, I''d stick with a halo because I think marquise cuts look very elegant in a halo, but sort of blah without one. Just my opinion, of course! But I''d consider asking WF for a quote on a somewhat simple halo setting in case it would be less expensive than the Verragio. This halo setting from WF modified for a marquise instead of round might be less expensive. This is a similar one with a prong setting as opposed to a bezel.

I am sorry I don't know enough about Marquise cuts to be helpful. They can tend to show a little color in the pointy edges and ask WF to evaluate it for a bowtie - ask them to get an ASET image for you.
A simple setting would be a safe bet (especially if she has not expressed she wants a halo), as you/she can later change it to a more elaborate halo, etc if you want.
Perhaps you could use your savings to buy her a necklace or something?

Edited to add - I just looked at the link - I am not really loving the stone

Hello everyone,

Thank you for all the feedback.

For the ring, my girlfriend never asked for the halo setting. She really wanted the gallery setting and the knife edge top. As for the marquise that is the exact diamond shape that she wanted. In my eyes I really like the marquise stone. I know that with or without the halo setting she will love the ring.

As for the halo setting with the prong that is exactly how I imagined it. I didn''t want the halo to be part of the diamond but I think that the setting would be great.

:) which is such a cute user name, why did you not like the stone??? Is there something wrong from the picture or is it just the shape that you didn''t like?

And to anyone that is willing to shop at whiteflash.com, the lady I am talking to there has been very helpful.

Thanks and anymore advice would be greatly appreciated.

Whiteflash is awesome! You can trust them! I wore a marquise for 14 years, I happen to really like them. I think the style ring you described would be really pretty.

First off thank you N.E.U. for the vote of confidence. I really hope that she will like the whole ring. I just decided that I am going to go with the pronged halo so that I''m just going to ensure that the actual diamond won''t be longer than 9.8 mm so that with the halo it won''t look too long. My girlfriend has shorter fingers and only a size 5 ring finger.

I also just checked jamesallen.com and I found 4 more diamonds to compare to:

Can I get some members to chime in on what diamond they think is the right one. I have emailed them and asked for an idealscope pic so hopefully that can help me out. And with our PS discount the loose diamonds are quite lower in price. I just hope that the quality and what they think an ideal marquise cut is as honest as whiteflash.

Thank you all in advance... Can''t wait to get this completed and propose!!!
