Heirloom diamond cert/appraisal question

Hi all,

My bf inherited an heirloom diamond--it's beautiful, but no one knows anything about it other than it's an emerald cut and is in the 2+ ct range. Obviously the stone needs to be appraised, but my question is should we send it to GIA (or drop it off, since we live in NYC), and then have it appraised as well, or does it not need to go to GIA?

Since it's an heirloom, there is no chance the diamond will ever be sold. In that case, a GIA cert probably isn't necessary, is my assumption. Correct?

correct. The usual reason for getting GIA lab grading is for purposes of either buying or selling and occasionally for things like estate management but it sounds like you're looking for a standard insurance type appraisal. Talk to your favorite appraiser first. That should start with an interview about your requirements and they can advise you if you need a different strategy.

Thanks Neil. Indeed, this would be just for insurance purposes. I've checked "Resources" for NYC based appraisers, but none of them seem to be those mentioned so often on the forum. Is there a NYC based appraiser that people would recommend?

I have several friends who practice there and they're listed in the resources but you might want to start a new thread with a title like 'looking for NYC appraiser' and see what others have to say about their experiences.
