Looking to buy a 0l7 carat diamond engagement ring. Going to go for triple excellent cut, F colour, VS2 or SI1. Was hoping to put the diamond through the HCA tool to see what the performance is but one retailer is suggesting to go for a Hearts and Arrows diamond. Just a little confused so it would be helpful to know which way to go? Should I still put the dimensions through the HCA tool? Any help would be much appreciated.

Do the HCA anyway. It only takes 20 seconds.

Depends on whose "hearts and arrows" definition you are going by. There is no set standard, and the proportions are more important to performance. There are LOTS of beautiful diamonds that are not hearts and arrows. Whether the $$$ premium is "worth it" is up to you.

I'd be very careful to compare pricing on H&A stones with reputable online vendors. H&A stones can be very high priced when you can find them in regular jewelry stores.

They are two seperate but related aspects. Proportions and Precision. You can have great precision without great proportions and vice versa. The HCA will help eliminate stones with proportions that are not optimal. A hearts and arrows view of the diamond will help you see the level of precision in terms of the three dimensional alignment of the facets. Think of the proportions as the engine and precision as the tuning. Ideally you want both.
