My BF gave me a budget of 12k. for my engagement ring. I know that I want a 1.5 and up rb. Is this possible? Or just totally impossible. I was looking at VSI and VS2. Is this at all possible or am I halucianting and should look in th 1c range?? Any help is deeply appreciated.

I would stick with VS2 or an eye clean SI1. That way you are not paying for something you can't see. What color range do you prefer? Many here recommend diamonds in the near colorless range (G, H, I, and J) in an excellent cut round because they can face up very white and offer a good deal.

Sticking just under 1.5 ct can also save you a great deal of money, as 1.5 carats carry a premium. A great 1.4 or so will look virtually the same and cost substantially less.

How much are you planning to spend on the setting?

Totally possible!! Does your budget include the setting?

How bout these baby''s!!

You said it''s $12k for the entire engagement ring, right? Our budget was a bit under that amount and we were able to buy a 1.4 G SI1 excellent cut along with a designer setting (total carat weight around 1.7).

Yes. Wedding band comes later, so there''s no budget for that......yet, but that shouldn''t be too hard to find.

thanks. that is a very nice stone.

If you need additional advice let me know...as mentioned, just went through this process and had a similar budget. I agree with the previous statement that purchasing a stone just under 1.5 makes a lot of sense since they are less expensive yet they pretty much face up like a 1.5c. That''s why I ultimately went with a 1.4.

I've been eyeing a diamond on Wink Jones' site. 1.56 ct J-VS2, 7.48 X 7.51 $8789

He also has a couple of other good-looking deals on his site:

That baby is going to be a good deal for someone.........the comments say that the stone faces up whiter than a J......

Given that color is graded from the pavilion side I would hope a J would look whiter facing up than a J face down!

There is a reason why these color grades aren''t graded by face up appearance...I can only assume that by saying it "faces up like an G/H" he must mean that from the top it looks like a G or H does from the pavilion side right? Meaning that there well be a faint tint face up, but will look like a high "near colorless" does from the side.

and obviously if you grade a G or H from the side then an ideal cut going to face up whiter in most lighting than it would from the side....so it would make sense that while it faced up like a "G or H" you would still be able to see a visual difference when comparing face up to a true G or H...anyway, that comment seems rather vague and circumspect to me...I wonder exactly what he means...

I *think* you might be over thinking this just a bit -- or maybe I''m not thinking enough -- but what I gather from that comment is that it''s a J that looks a lot whiter than one would assume.

That particular vendor is well respected, so I was taking his word for the appearance relative to the appearance of the average J........

Totally do-able. What is your color sensitivity? If you have not already looked, you should go visit vendors in person that carry gia and ags graded stones (so that you can know the color grading is reliable) and find out how sensitive to color you are. You can easily drop down in clarity too if you just want an ''eye clean'' stone (even if you want a totally eye clean stone) and don''t have issues with mind cleanliness.
