Is there a way to use the HCA on a princess cut stone? I want to compare the quality of a few stones before purchasing. Also, what are ideal table and depth percentages for a princess cut in the .5-.65 ct range? What would be considered too deep of a depth?

Sorry, there isn''t an HCA for other shapes yet. However, these AGS old cut charts might be helpful for other shapes (type in princess): http://www.gemappraisers.com/oldcutgraderules.asp

Also, looking at AGS000 stones is probably a good place to start to look for well-cut princess stones.

Interesting turns of language.

AGS has developed black box systems based on similar principles of light performance to Garry''s HCA. So, where you like what HCA does, AGS certification should help.

AGA, as linked above, is related, but different, and not black box...Maybe midway between AGS & AGA from that point of view (with respect to being an open system at least), but...the criteria is different. Dave would describe the criteria best. Maybe well cut/crafted...without the extra more narrow focus on light performance. (He/Dave had a new system for that!).

thanks for the clarification RG, you are right.

Thanks KC...it''s a lot of alphabet soup, I miffed up, too. Where I say...

that second AGA should be HCA.

Oofa.

Having talks with patent lawyers and charting the course now that the HCA patent has been granted.

It would be possible to do an HCA for princess cuts. And PDA''s are a possibility

Thanks guys for your help! I ran a pricescope search for princess cuts using the ideal cut figures given on the AGA chart and was surprised to find so many. What is my best determining factor when deciding between two stones with similar specs (i.e. depth, table, crown)? The reason why I ask is because I have found an ACA cut stone from WF that I am really leaning towards, but what makes that specific cut any better than say an ideal cut sold from another reputable online vendor? I know the ACA is WF''s trademark cut, but is it possible to find diamonds with just as good or better cut elsewhere, and if so how will I know if the stone is comparable to an ACA? Also, I have head people talk about AGS000, how do you know when a stone meets these standards, will it say on the grading report? Sorry if I sound so uneducated about diamonds, because I am, and that’s why im here, haha. Thanks

I think you''d want to consider this by way of levels of refinement.

A) good because AGS0 target
B) Better because of WF''s additional attention to detail, producing things like confirmingly pleasing ASET views (better than run of the mill AGS0?), or who know what...presumably...though, they are attaching their ACA name for a reason beyond the AGS0. Has this been specified?

Then, go compare.

Start with A. If you find it...not sure how you''ll compare what it has against B. But...if you don''t have A, don''t start.

I''d say.

If I was ever shoping for a princess cut it would be an AGS0 with an AGS report saying so or a stone that had a GIA cert plus scored AGS0 light performance when ran thru the AGS software by the vendor.
Paul's Crafted-by-Infinity line has some awesome AGS0 princess cuts also.

Another source for ags0 level performance is http://www.goodoldgold.com
Jon has both AGS graded and GIA graded AGS0 light performance diamonds.
