I'm looking into upgrading my 1.03 ct stone to 1.5 ct. I'm going to look at a 1.5 ct H SI2 stone that is EGL-USA certified tomorrow. I wanted to stay away from EGL based on advice from this forum, but they claim it's eye clean (we'll see tomorrow) and her price is great- $7200. I found 2 other stones that I love online also.
I really want to keep my current setting, so my question is- how much is it to re-set a stone? I called around and the going rate seems to be about $150 for a stone o that size but I know it will be complicated going from a 1 ct to 1.5. The woman my fiance bought the setting from told me that she can order a new part (I'm assuming the head). It's an 18kt white gold setting.
The lady we originally bought the ring offered us a 1.50 ct stone for $8500 - trade in + tax. It was GIA cert J SI2 excellent cut/sym/polish. Assuming the numbers for the table, depth, crown & pavillion are good (I can't remember what they are, but let's say for arguments sake that they are good), is this a fair price?
I'm kind of lost and don't know what to do. I found a gorgeous 1.6 ct online that is my favorite actually (unless I really love the EGL stone I see tomorrow) but I'm really really afraid that it will cost to much to set. I really want to keep my setting b/c my fiance is so proud of picking it and I really think he'd be devastated if I changed it.
What do you guys think?
