Would it make sense to buy a cheap, steep/deep diamond, then have Brian Gavin re-cut the diamond? Would they do such a thing? What would it cost? Is this a dumb idea?

Though I am no expert here. But after reading a lot of post related to the Brian Gavin recut, I think i can still be able to share with u a bit.
It is no deny that Brian Gavin did a great job in the recutting of the diamond to bring out more sparkle out of it. However do bear in mind that it would never be as great as cutting the raw diamond into the ideal H&A pattern in the first place. Though you will still be able to get the H&A pattern but it would be a bit off still. This service i personally think is best suitable for those who already bought a not ideal cut diamond before without much knowledge and now after being educated, would want to still maximise what we have got so hence send it for recut.

Therefore if you can i would strongly recommend that you buy an ideal cut diamond from the start rather than buying a poorly cut one and send it for recut.

This isn't exactly 'dumb,' but there are no guarantees that you'd even be able to buy a stone that would be a 'good deal' that Brian would recut. You'd buy, what, a 1.25 carat poor cut, and hope that it can become a 1 carat ideal? It's not all that expensive to do a recut, as far as I've read, but it carries risks that aren't necessarily worth the hassle if you can just buy an ideal cut to begin with.

That is a very risky proposition for someone who isn't knowledgeable about diamond cutting. Brian doesn't even commit to recutting a stone until he sees it.

If it's just a regular "steep deep" with a normal girdle and no feathers, I'm sure it could be done. Steep deeps can be recut much more easily than a shallow stone, because there will be less diameter and carat weight loss. I think it's $350 a carat for a recut.
