We have caught some unscrupulus people who bring in ''strays'' they claim to have found. When the animal''s chip is scanned, it turns out in reality it is their owner dumping them on the shelter.
How someone could do that to a pet, I''ll never know.

I know FG...that boils my blood too. Pet is good enough to be a companion to you until you are done with them then you just what, dump them at the shelter? How about finding a good home for them. Above and beyond I can''t even really imagine handing off my pet to anyone else anyway. But I do understand there are circumstances at times when a pet can''t stay in the home it''s accustomed to, so sad for sure. And imagine being the pet, to just be dumped off somewhere. So sad.

DiamondFan, I totally agree re: pets in cars. Whenever I have left P it''s been for 5 minutes max and only in the winter OR if it was spring or summer, under a shaded tree with windows cracked and I literally RAN in and out of the store. If there''s any way to get around leaving her in the car I will do it...but every once in a while I need to stop somewhere and I have her with me and it''s just not conducive to go home, drop her off then drive back 30 minutes to the store or whatever. But yeah I always hate leaving her in cars for multiple reasons. Though like someone else''s dog, she typically will stare outside for a bit then lay down and sleep. Thankfully.

Dumping off pets at a shelter is so irresponsible to me. I actually got my parents'' doggie at a shelter. Her previous owner had been moved to a nursing home and could not take her along, so she had no choice I suppose (well probably her children had a choice with what to do with the dog, but whatever). Anyway, she was so cute that I couldn''t help it when I heard the sad story: I had to adopt her. I''ve always been an animal lover, and she was just the right dog for my apartment. A few weeks later, I took her to visit my parents for Thanksgiving, and they fell IN LOVE with her and talked me into letting them have her as their Christmas gift. She seemed to adore them so much that I couldn''t refuse. Three years later and they are still absolutely obsessed with her. She''s like another child to them. So, even though it was a terrible situation, it ended up having a happy ending.

Still, it''s SO sad that there are countless other animals out there who will not be so lucky. I was just in Pet Smart tonight with my MIL and they had kitties up for adoption. They had all their little stories posted about how they''d been dumped off at shelters by previous owners, and it just made me want to cry.

My cat is microchipped. I actually didn''t get it done until it was necessary for the paperwork for her to move to England with me. I love it, it wasn''t expensive and made me feel better when she was lost for 5 weeks last summer. I definitely wouldn''t hesitate to have it done again.

Our Charlie Brown is chipped and didn't need anesthesia to do it. It was a very simple procedure. We used Home Again because of their network of services.

Our doggie was microchipped before we got him-the shelter we went to did it for a nominal charge before they sent him home with us.

I''m with you Elmorton, I can''t think of a single reason not to microchip.

Great reminder, DKS!
