I am thinking of having a little something done. I have a lot of loose skin under my chin from gaining and losing so much weight with both my pregnancies and it is not going away now that I have lost the weight :blackeye: It needs to GO! But I have no idea where to even begin the process!

If you have had cosmetic surgery I would love to hear your experience. How you decided to go for it, how you found a doctor, anything you wish you knew or with you did differently.

Thanks! :wavey:

I wish!

have you seen realself.com? The people give really honest, thorough reviews of their procedures.

I'd be interested in hearing this too! I haven't, but I'm thinking of having a tummy tuck. I have the same issue as you do Dreamer, except the loose skin is on my tummy from gaining so much weight with my second baby. :(sad

On line research... Then I interviewed three different doctors and picked from those three based on what I liked.

Some doctors charge for a consultation but I think its worth it to find who you want cutting on you!

I've had two (four if you count the revisions) plastic surgeries (nose and breasts) which were not considered cosmetic surgery. What I would tell you is that the tissue will never look completely natural and you will always have scarring which will be visible to you if no one else. It will impair function to a certain extent. I guess it would describe it as always feeling "wrong." I would urge you to think carefully about it because there's a limit to how much they can do and still have you look normal and you will feel different and possibly somewhat impaired for the rest of your life. Don't underestimate how sick you will be and for how long. Being swollen and in pain for months is not exactly debilitating, but don't imagine that you'll be cleaning behind the refrigerator for a few months either. What's more, if you don't like the results you can get minor revisions but you can never go back and start over. The people you see with scary plastic surgery disasters are the people who had a single less than perfect outcome and kept going back in hopes of finally getting it right.

That said, my experiences really weren't that bad and I am happy with the results. But I wasn't going for looking better, I was going for normal.

No but I've considered a breast reduction and probably will seriously look into it once I'm done nursing this one last baby.

As a funny side note, ironically I had this conversation with my 8 & 10 year old daughters today during lunch.

Younger DD: Mom, how do people change how they look?

Older DD: Plastic surgery!

Younger DD: No, I mean from the time they're babies to when they grow up!

Kid are fun.

Remember to look up the difference between a cosmetic surgeon and a plastic surgeon. Only stick with board certified plastic surgeons.

Get as educated as you would about diamonds. You screw up on a bling purchase, it's only $ lost. You screw up on your face = a whole diff ballpark.

I had SO's nose bump shaved down when he needed to get his nasal turbinate removed and his septum straightened. He had been a mouth breather his whole life, so I insisted he actually get some oxygen to his brain ;)) Figured we'd go to a plastic surgeon instead of an ENT surgeon since we didn't only want the obvious medical benefits, but also wanted him to get a prettier face, not risk getting uglier.

Find someone that specializes in face surgeries. One surgeon might make great boobies, but that doesn't mean he will do well on a neck lift. Most surgeons have galleries on their website. You might have to travel to a plastic surgery heavy area like Los Angeles/Beverly Hills to get the best of the best. But I wouldn't want you to get anything less than the best of the best, especially for something on your face (well, near) where everything is at stake.

I've already told DH that when the baby factory closes I am getting some work done. My boobs tend to get bigger when I gain weight but not really get smaller when I lose. So they are ridiculous. I'd love to get them down to a large B/small C. Even better- put in an internal bra thing so I can wear cute shirts without bras :)

I got a rhinoplasty in 2011 and it is the BEST thing I have done for myself! It is something I had contemplated for many years and after my husband proposed to me in 2010 I knew I wanted to get it taken care of before the wedding. Of course I didn't do it BECAUSE of the wedding, but the wedding definitely motivation for me to finally go through with it!

I started searching around my area and I found a few different doctors, though not many at all. I read their websites over and over and I read reviews on other websites. I narrowed it down to two and contacted them. I had a consultation in January of 2011.

My surgeon was wonderful. He spent a good hour with me answering my questions, giving me options, taking "before" pictures and showing me what it would look like after, and getting to know me and why I wanted my nose fixed. I think he was making sure that I was doing it for ME and not for someone else, which I thought was kind. I ended up having my surgery October 2011 and it was fine. The only scary part was that my heart rate when REALLY high when I was in recovery because my body reacted to something. But when I woke up after three hours in recovery (I was only supposed to be there an hour) I was perfectly fine. I didn't know about the heart rate thing until after the fact and even though it didn't last too long they were keeping me for observation.

I remember waking up and feeling like I just had THE BEST sleep of my entire life. I felt so relaxed and calm. My mom came into the area I was in and almost started bawling which freaked me out! I was pretty unrecognizable though, since I was super swollen, bruised, and had a cast on. But once she realized I wasn't in any pain she calmed down. I looked a LOT worse than I felt.

The next few days I just hungout at home and watched SVU. I slept a LOT (on a recliner) and wasn't in any pain. I was swollen for several days and then one night most of the swelling just vanished! By the sixth day I was starting to get uncomfortable. I wasn't in pain, but they only had one size splint and I have a small nose. Once the swelling went down I could feel the splint in my nose and it was getting increasingly annoying. Luckily the next day I was getting my cast off.

I got the cast off and saw the CUTEST, most PERFECT little nose I have ever seen! And it was on MY face! And I still looked like ME!

That was my experience. Everyday I put on my makeup in the morning I still find myself admiring it. I am VERY glad that I went through with it! My husband even admitted how great it looks and he wasn't exactly "for" the surgery (although not necessarily "against" it either... just thought it was a waste because I am "beautiful" just how I am and all that).

Yes, I've had rhinoplasty and mentoplasty, at the same time, in 1998. My situation is a bit different, though. I was referred by multiple acquaintances, to a plastic surgeon in Utah, who ran a clinic out of his house, thereby eliminating the need/cost for general anesthesia. I was put in a "twilight sleep" with sleeping pills and valium. I did start to wake up while they were using the chisel and hammer to break my nose, but they shot me up with some Demerol and back to sleep I went. I spent a week at the clinic, and was checked on daily by the MD.

I didn't have any complications, thankfully, but looking back, it was probably a bit risky. But, it saved me a lot of money, which at the time was very important to me.

I've never regretted it and I LOVE my profile now! :D I told DH that I WILL be getting a browlift by the time I'm 50 (a little over 5 years from now...gulp! )

I'm so confused as this seems to be happening to me as well! I was a 34B from the age of 13 or 14 until I was 21. I put on some weight and got up to a 34D by the age of 25. Then I lost about 15 pounds. My favorite bra kicked the dust, so I figured I had better get fitted again, only to find that I had gone up to a DD! WTH?? I'm a little afraid of what they'll do when I start having kids. Meanwhile my mother barely fills an A cup so we can't understand where my boobs have come from.

I'm a whimp but this terrifies me!!! I'm so glad you're ok!

Yes, a breast reduction. I had to get referrals because I had an HMO to contend with, so basically my insurance picked my surgeon. I had about 7 pounds of breast tissue removed and went from a 32GG (but I needed to go up to a 32HH) to a 34DD (now). They deemed it medically necessary and paid for the whole thing minus $500.

I'd do a TON of research first and go to the best doctors. It's your face, after all.

Do your research!

Honestly, it's a risk I would never take unless I needed some severe disfigurement corrected, but I won't tell anyone else what to do coz it's your body. As you realise, there is a chance that things will end up worse than before. I would ask careful questions about the surgeon's morbity and mortality figures.

One word of warning: never ever have surgery anywhere outside a fully equipped operating theatre with a full contingent of resuscitation equipment, ITU and full anaesthetic back up. Lil misfit, I was horrified to hear of your experience. I am so glad you're ok!!

I'l tell you in 2 weeks once my surgery is over. :appl:

EDIT- and to just add my body changed alot after 2 back to back pregnacys. I'm just not happy with how I look. While my DH says Im beautiful I would just like to fix a few things so I told him after 18 months of dieting and excersise I would go under the knife. I actually started a thread a few months back about plastic surgery. I will see if I can find it in a minute.

I actually only contacted 1 surgeon who I had heard wonderful things about. I also had family members who are doctors look into him and his certifications. I did a consult and then a follow up appointment. I know you are supposed to "shop around" for surgeons but I felt at meeting this guy he would take care of me. I did other research online on local surgeons. Most have pictures on their websites to show before and afters. They also have bios so you can read about where they went to school, study and have practiced.

Most consults cost around $100 so I would narrow down a list of 2-4 people you are interested in meeting. See what they have to say and go from there.

Goodluck!

I had the girls reduced about 20 years ago. Best thing I ever did. Due to weight gain/loss over the years they are a little saggy now though, so I'm seriously considering fluffing them up a bit.

My doctor was referred to me by another friend who had the same thing done and was really happy with the results.

The recovery was a bit more uncomfortable that I expected, but I'm SO glad I did it.

I'd have some in a New York minute if i could afford to. Don't want to look 18 again, but I'd sure love to have my jawline back! HATE the sags. Maybe a little eye tweak too. Would like to recognize the face I see in the mirror a little better!

I'm too much of a scaredy cat. Risk adverse all the freakin way. But if I wasn't I might be able to think of a thing or 2 I would do. :cheeky:

No, I have not had cosmetic surgery.
I got this ugly for free. :wink2:

I had my breast reconstruction fixed just this past April. He put in a new implant ( saline expandable) in the right breast( the Reconstructed one) he then added a smaller expandable saline implant in the other side. At my age I needed a lift and more volume plus I wanted them to be even. I wanted them in the same time zone!
He did a great job. 8 weeks pst op the expanders are still in, and I go back in August/sept and will have them sealed up. So far I'm not adding any more saline but we will see. I can actually go braless ( but the doctor says don't for long!)
I have to still sleep in a bra-and he cautioned me to try to sleep on my back for a few more weeks.

I also had Hips/ abdominal liposuction done at the same time. I had a scar from the tummy tuck back in 95. My TT was not cosmetic( but I did look good) it was part of my reconstruction. The procedure is called a TRAM flap. My belly tissue was used to make my reconstructed Breast. The ends of the original TT scar were dog eared and I had what I felt were way bigger hips cause the fat had no where to go!! So he sucked it all out!
I love it!! I was sore as hell and black and blue and the compression garment was torture!! Moving was rough for the first 3 days. Now I'm very pleased and the swelling is all down and I'm down about 7 inches on my hips!
My dr comes very well recommended and actually several teachers in my school have had him do their breasts.
He is a perfectionist and super patient.
I did research before choosing him, as my original surgeon had moved.

I'm actually more scared of the next step..... Nipple tattoo!!!

I would have a mommy makeover if I could afford it. I would have a little lift done on the girls and a tummy tuck. I weigh less than before my three pregnancies and all I have left is some loose skin on my stomach which drives me nuts.

I had a brow, midface lift and neck lift in April. Neck lift was very uncomfortable for a week. Hard to swallow. The other 2 procedures were painless. Swelling and bruising started to resolve 4 days after surgery. I was back in the gym at week 3. All bruising and swelling gone at 6 wks.

I was lucky to have a great surgeon in my town. Check references and on line dr. rating sites. Choose a doc with a lot of experience doing the procedure you want.

Wow, Elisa, you've been through a lot. You're a real trooper! :appl:

ETA: My mum had the nipple tattoo after her reconstruction and it was no big deal at all, and painless. Looks totally real, too.

Thank you everyone for your perspectives! I think I will book a consult in the fall with the person local to me, and based on that decide if I want to seek additional consults and perhaps have the procedure. But I think it is going to be more $$ than I initially thought so I think a timeline of next year is the earliest I could go even IF I decided to move forward. But having one consult would be nice to learn more and have a sense of price etc., to help be decide whether to more forward with more research or not.

I had my jaws done for medical reason but that procedure consider cosmetic surgery for others and insurance co. My lower jaw is protruding (underbite)and it causes constant migraine and tenderness by the jawline by the ear and behind the ears. I also experience jaw locked and unable to move my jaw due to pain. The symptom started in my early 20's, I tried to tough them out and hopes that it will goes away. I approached 30's, I decided to get the done. My good friend has hers done when she was 16 yrs. I had to wear braces for 1 yr prior to the procedure. My lower jaws broke into 3 sections and moved back and screw back in. The upper jaw broke into 1 section and moved forward and screwed in and the two le fortes inserted in my nostrils to prevent from flatten. I have over 20 screws in my mouth. My recovery was not bad but it was very long recovery and I was on liquid diet for 4 wks and soft mushy foods for 4 wks after that. I stayed 1 night at the hospital and total time for operation was almost 4 hrs long. My healing and recovery is much slower than the average patient and bruised severely. I continue to have braces for 7 months post-surgery. Last July was when I had them removed.

The procedure was a success, I no longer have migraine and tenderness. Another result from the procedure is that my profile changed, I received many compliments from . I also do and don't like my new profile. At the certain angle, I love it, and at the certain angle I hate it and I wish for my old one. My chin is partial numb. I do like my new smile. The procedure was very expensive $24K-$25K, this is the discount rate w/ paying cash. I don't have exact number handy.

To me, it's medical reason for procedure but it has a cosmetic benefit.

I really want breast implants, just to be a small C nothing outrageous but my husband loves smaller breast and I am so scared of my body rejecting the implants. Some days I feel I will do it and some days I feel like I will never do it, one of my friends did hers and one breast was a bit bigger and they make her look top-heavy.

I had tummy lipo last year and its the best thing ever. But the recovery is brutal but my results are amazing.I am thinking of getting botox for my laugh lines.

Whatever you do make sure you go to a board certified surgeon and check his/her reviews and ask tons of questions. I even spoke with the anesthesiologist before my lipo.
