Have you ever dropped your laptop?

I feel horrible. My SO/FF got me this laptop, and I really love it. I know that he researched for a long time in order to make sure that he got me the best laptop that he could find.

I was playing with it on the couch, but I bent over to get something off the end table, and the laptop fell from my lap to the (carpeted) floor. Of course, it landed upside down, and it was open.

It logged me out right away - I don't know if it was the trauma or if it hit a button, etc.

I logged back on, and all seems fine now, but one of the hinges is creaking/clicking. Of course, it might have always done that, since I never thought about it before.

Other than that, the hinges seem to be on track and are opening and closing smoothly. It also goes off when I close it and wakes back up when I open it.

I'm just terrified that I broke it. Do you think it would be showing symptoms by now if something bad happened? Have you ever dropped yours, or am I just a total idiot klutz? :(

I know it's not a huge deal in the grand scheme of life, but I'm just upset over it because my SO got it for me and I love it.

I haven't dropped mine, yet. I'm sure I will someday.

Yours sounds like it is working fine. I'm pretty sure it is supposed to go to sleep when you shut the lid.

Please relax and stop worrying.

I have dropped mine before. It's still alive and kicking. Right now it is probably yelling profanities because I can't use it until I re hook wireless up at my grandparents, and I need to clean it.

Your sounds like it's ok. It's probably thinking "If I click, maybe mom will love on me and use me a bunch"

;))

LOL, thanks to both of you. :)

I shut it down and then turned it on just to make sure that all of the parts are ok, and it started like normal. It does seem to be fine, and it wasn't a very far fall, so hopefully I'm just being a complete worrywart. :)

I've only had it for a month, so that's probably why I'm being so crazy. I'm always like this with my new stuff, but then after awhile, it doesn't bother me as much. Just the other day I dropped my cell phone on the concrete in the parking lot, and that wasn't even an issue for me. I guess stuff really does just happen.

Thanks again!

I dropped my last computer like 30 times  :P  . It lasted around 3 years, my new computer has kissed the floor only ones

I can't count the # of times I've dropped mine. I used to travel for one of the big consulting firms, so I was always dragging my laptop on/off of planes, back and forth to the hotel every night, etc. I dropped it at least 6 times and it was fine. In fact, when it was a few years old and my manager wanted me to get a new one, but the company wouldn't pay for it, he told me to start checking it through on the airplane. He figured if I couldn't break it, the baggage handlers should be able to, lol! He was kidding of course....

Oh I sure did. I had an Apple laptop and it was sitting on the bed with the cord blogged into the wall. I tripped on the cord. Boom right on a slate tile floor. ;(

Apple wanted a bazillion dollars to fix it (ok, $700) and I haven't bought an Apple laptop again to this day.

Yeah I drop mine all the time. It's an Apple 12" Powerbook G4 and I've had it for about 6 years. The last time I dropped it was the worst. Now it's all bent and the battery hangs off a little. But it still works! I'm getting a new one for my birthday in a couple of weeks (13" MacBook Pro) and I'm going to try to be more careful with that one!

Hmmm - I also have an Apple laptop, but the power cord has a magnetic connection to the computer, so if it gets pulled on, it just comes off, instead of pulling the computer down. I don't know when they added this feature.

This has definitely helped me before, because my dog has tripped over it a couple of times, and it just disconnected the cord. The laptop that I dropped today is an Asus, and it has the classic type of power cord. I try to make sure to plug this one in high up, so that it's not hanging down for my dog (or me!) to trip over. :)

Oh, and my dog did trip over my SO's laptop cord once, and it did go crashing to the floor - also slate tile. Luckily it was just on a coffee table, and didn't fall too far, with no permanent damage - but the framework did pop out of place a bit.

If you damaged anything serious, like the hard drive, you would be seeing the blue screen of death by now. Stop worrying!

I actually cried about two weeks ago because I tripped and kicked the screen in on my four or five month old laptop. I was SO pissed at myself! I love it. It's perfect, super fast, had all my programs just so, and I had to buy it to replace the other, relatively new one that DH shattered the screen on too. So now I have two relatively new laptops with mangled screens. The one I just recently destroyed I'm using right now- I hook it up to the TV screen and it works fine, if a bit weird to surf the net on a 50something inch screen! I think it may be fixable but I really don't know- I've been begging DH to go take it in to a computre place for me to see, but so far no luck, lol. (He is the one who's off on the weekdays to do it.) I think the other one may actually have been fixable but it was really screwed up otherwise.

You didn't break it. Trust me. If you did you would know, the liquid crystal screen would be shattered and you'd see nothing. They're fairly tough except the screens.

No biggie even if they do need to replace the screen - your hard drive is fine :))

Yes and several times.

My first laptop was a 13" Sony Vaio before the wireless days and I broke off the power cord and modem. That bill way pricey.

My next laptop was a 17" Toshiba which was too heavy for me and yes I dropped it was well but it was sturdy and I didn't break anything.

My Dell Inspiron I did drop a few times but I didn't inflict any damage.

My current laptop is a 15.5" Sony Vaio and the top is very "top heavy" and I have not dropped it but certainly have come close.

My newest toy is a 10" Toshiba netbook and i can pick it up with one hand and I love the fact it is so small.

DH always threatens me if I break another laptop I will be cut off. :naughty:

Yes, I dropped it once on my left foot and I broke....my foot! The computer was fine though.
