Have you ever cut your own hair?

I had a hairdresser give me a great tip for cutting bangs if you want a natural look (not the precision straight across look).

You gather up the bangs and start twisting them tightly into a rope in the center of your forehead facing down. Then using sharp scissors you just cut off the ends across the bridge of your nose below your eyebrows.

When you release the twist you will end up with very natural looking bangs that are always the right length (not too short, not too long). They will naturally taper slightly longer at both sides. I''ve been doing that for years now between major cuts.

I have from time to time cut my bangs but never the rest of my hair. It wouldn''t be a pretty sight..

Only bangs!

My mum cut my hair as a child, and continued through high school, and I quickly learnt to cut it myself in college after going with a friend and watching her pay $85 for layers

I've never had my hair professionally cut, and it's my best feature

. It's past my shoulderblades, so getting the back layers requires some manoeuvring and a lot of mirrors. I cut FIs, my mum's, and my dad's hair regularly too.

I have had only 2 professional haircuts since 1997. My hair isn''t always perfect, but I have received numerous compliments. My favorite hairdresser retired out of the business long ago, and I don''t have the patience to ''train'' another!

So even if I make boo-boos (and I have), at least I never ever cut it too short.

I do ask people whose hair I admire, and think I could emulate, where they get their hair done. If anyone ever said they went to a local hairdresser, I''d make myself an appointment for a reshaping by a professional. Alas, most of the great ''dos seem always to be on out-of-towners!

But, seriously, have you seen the heads of the beauticians at your favorite salon? You know they work on their own hair and each other''s. If they do that bad a job on their own . . .

I used to cut my own bangs when I had bangs.
It came out ok.

I recently chopped off 12" from the back myself since DH didn''t want to help me.
My hair is lopsided right now, but it''s ok since I usually braid it up.

I have cut my own hair several times.

Once when I was very little, probably about 4, I cut a huge chunk out of one side of my hair and aparently my older sister cryed alot about that because my mum couldn''t "fix" it.

Afew other times in my early teens it must have seemed like a good idea to cut my own bangs.
It was not a good idea either time.

Only bangs....unsuccessfully

I have cut my own bangs a couple of times. Some were ok, some were really not ok.

When I was about 4 I decided to cut my hair. I am not sure what I did, but my mom came into my room and was snuggling with me when all this hair started falling from my head. She freaked out and started crying. She thought my hair was falling out and that I was going to die. She finally asked me if I cut my hair and I told her that I had. If she had only asked me sooner she could have saved herself alot of tears.

I heard once that if your head is completely upside down and you cut it straight across that it will give you perfect layers. Is that true?

I would never! My hair is very naturally straight, so any mistake looks awful. I even hesitate to cut my side swept bangs, but I've done it a few times.

I had a roommate in college with beautiful thick curly hair and she often cut it herself with great results. She said when your hair is curly you can make some mistakes and they'll all just blend in, which makes sense.

Thanks Dani--def will check it out soon!

And thanks to everyone else for the great feedback--it''s so interesting and some funny stories too! I''ve cut my bangs plenty of times..I wear them long and my hair grows fast! I do have super sharp scissors, meant for hair cutting.

Now I wouldn''t dare do my own other than the bangs, but I have no time lately and my hair is crazy long so it crossed my mind...probably not a smart thing right before the holidays! I told DH about this (more to give him an idea of how little time I had) and he said he''d do it--I think he''s sick of my overgrown hair too, haha.

Dianne, can you describe again how you cut bangs? I always do mine straight across (the times I do do it..). What do you mean by jagged angles?
I found this YouTube video that you may find helpful. The girl talks a lot before she gets to cutting but it''s pretty informative. In case you want to fast forward, at around the 4:20 minute mark she does some point-cutting, which is what I referred to as "snip at jagged angles". Basically, you take the tips of the scissors and cut up into the ends of the hair. It breaks up that perfectly straight line and makes them look a bit fringy and softer.

Yes! I did it first a few years ago because I didn''t like the straight-across look at the bottom of my hair. I take my scissors and cut into the hair instead of across if that makes sense. It makes it look much more natural, thins the ends which I really need, and works better with my curly/wavy hair. I found out after the fact from a hairdresser at Aveda that cutting into the hair was a fancy schmancy technique. I do still get salon cuts but I often go back and fix the ends myself. I just can''t attempt the layers myself yet!
