I am not sure how anyone could still not understand the insanity of our president sneering at our top scientists and doctors and telling the American people that masks are for sissies, that drinking bleach etc. is a cure, that it is all a democratic hoax and so on, month after month, while the US becomes number one in deaths from it.

Too many people believe our president's dangerous, nonstop, crazy lies. I am not sure how it's legal or allowed for our president to spew out these obvious, dangerous, sick lies to the American people. Our country is at the very edge of authoritarian takeover by a lunatic. The time is long past where anyone should believe anything at all that's coming from the right these days.

It could have been a lot higher but it could have been a lot lower how in the heck do you even define acceptable???
How was the question worded?

And, how reliable is the data?

It says the margin of error is +/- 2.4 points, but I agree, I'd want to see more information on the sample size and how this data was collected before I took it seriously.

I know a lot of people who dont trust the gov numbers but i dont know anyone who thinks 170k is ok.

It's a YouGov poll

I would trust the methodology, they are a non-partisan, international polling firm.

The CBS News national survey was conducted by YouGov using a nationally representative sample of 2,226 U.S. registered voters interviewed between August 19-21, 2020. The margin of error is ± 2.4 points.

I believe that 'republicans' find the deaths acceptable because Trump has said it may not be true, they are adherents, or followers of Trumpism rather than 'being what was considered a republican'.

It's easy to say something is acceptable if you think the number isn't true, but I believe the number is true. But we are all entrenched in our camps and there is no changing anyone.

I don't agree with a blanket statement that people don't change their minds. I myself have definitely changed my mind about many things after learning more about them. I doubt I'm unique in that.

In the case of politics, changing my mind was often because of learning more from what was being said on online forums about an issue (and then googling around etc. myself to verify). Sometimes, I was originally arguing the other way.

In this case, there has been UNPRECEDENTED, insane, fascist levels of pro-Trump propaganda and lies. Once people see through it, they get it.

In that case, we're all f*&*@d.

Even at this moment in time, I'd given people in general more credit than that.

I think it is unrealistic to expect that we can control a novel virus - asking a question about whether a level of deaths is 'acceptable' infers we have some control over how things pan out in the end.

What if it is the case that the virus takes who it will take, and lockdowns and mask wearing just delay the inevitable at massive economic and societal cost?

I think a better question is whether the level of deaths from preventable cardiovascular diseases and cancers is acceptable...

... but then a cynic might ponder on the fact they are slow deaths that companies and governments can make money from through sales of and taxes on cigarettes and high fat/high sugar foods until it happens...

What kind of question is this?
Obviously, no deaths is the only acceptable answer.
Very sadly, with the pandemic, some deaths were unavoidable, but once we started to understand what was going on, compliance with the quarantine, distancing and PPE requirements should have been a no brainer so that the death numbers were significantly lower than they are.
And they would have been lower, had all leaders of our country stood up and supported the recommendations, in word and deed.

This is my question too. Perhaps to deliver this desired response of outrage if I'm being cynical about why someone would ask it.

im in the no deaths are acceptable corner especially the more we all learn how it is spread
i was thinking about my dad today
he died of cancer when my sister was still at high school
i was thinking how if all i had had to do was stay home to save him we would have all done it in a heart beat
