Have Tacori or Authorized Jeweller Set Diamond?

Hi All,

We recently bought a loose diamond and now wish to have it set in a Tacori mount. Yesterday, we visited the authorized Tacori jeweller in our area and they recommend that their goldsmith set the stone rather than shipping it off to Tacori. I understand that by not shipping the stone to Tacori is safer however our jeweller charges $275 to mount the stone. That seems really steep to me. The SA also said that shipping the stone to Tacori to be set would be very costly - I don't understand this, we got our stone from JbEG and insured shipping was $75 to Canada.

Anyone have some thoughts on whether it's better to have the jeweller set it or have Tacori set it?

Do you already own the mount? It should be set by Tacori in order to maintain the warranty and to make sure nothing happens to the setting. If that's not important to you, and your local jeweler would be able to repair it properly should a melee diamond fall out, for example, then have your local guy set it. I would imagine it should only cost $75 to ship it to Tacori from your jeweler, but no idea what they would charge to set it though.

Sorry, I wasn't clear in my post. We will be having the setting made brand new - it's my e-ring. We got an OEC from JbEG which we will have set into the Tacori. Do you think Tacori would charge extra if they set the stone for us (Tacori themselves, not the Tacori authorized dealer)?

Authorized dealers have contracts and are approved to sell their brand. However, my guess is that the authorized dealers have not been tested/trained on how to work with the settings so I'd feel more comfortable with Tacori doing anything to the setting.

Hi,

I work with Tacori, so I will just review their policies and hopefully not get in trouble!

In Canada, Tacori allows retailers to set their own stones, still under Tacori warranty, to avoid customs problems. See, when you ship a loose stone across the border and it returns set, according to Canada customs it's been 'altered' and you have to pay duty (again!) on the entire value of the ring and stone. That is where it get's costly. The shipping should be about $100 return.

The only time we charge to set a stone is when it wasn't purchased from us (as I see now yours was purchased elsewhere). $275 is pretty steep, unless it is a very large stone or a complex setting job.

Hope this helps! I would be happy to answer any more questions.
