Hi everyone!

I''ve been given a diamond solitaire by a friend of mine to help as a trade-in for purchasing my gf an engagement ring. I know what she wants and have a basic understanding of the quality diamond I''m looking for, but I have no idea how to go about trading in the stone I already have. What should I be doing to make sure I don''t end up getting a horrible deal?

Thanks,
Ice Shopper

Welcome!

How kind of your friend to give you this stone! Much depends on the quality and desirability of the diamond - round shapes are generally the easiest to sell or trade, and also it is very helpful to have a GIA or AGS grading report. But even with these attributes, it can be difficult to sell a diamond, it can be usual to expect about 30 - 50% of the original price paid.

This thread should give you some ideas on selling procedures.

Perhaps if you find a diamond you like, it could be worth seeing if they would take this one in as a trade as you suggested, as you might get a better deal that way. Can you give us some more details of the diamond you have?

The stone I have is a round cut (gf wants a princess) and is approximately 85 points and a high quality stone as far as color and clarity go according to my friend. I can check with them to see if they have any papers that show the grading.

I''m going in tonight to visit with a small local jeweler that my family has used in the past here in Salt Lake City, UT to talk to him about possibly trading the stone in towards an engagement ring. He also has an appraiser he uses for his work that charges $60.00 a piece to appraise jewelry.

I would check to see if this diamond has a GIA report, so you know exactly what you have. If you get the diamond appraised, make sure you use an appraiser who is working for YOU and not the guy you intend to buy from.

Thanks for your response so far. I admit that I would like to get it looked at by someone with no ties to the jeweler I''ll be going into. How do I go about finding an appraiser in my area and what should I expect to pay to have a stone appraised? I''ve looked on the appraiser finder on this website, but the closest is about 400 miles from Salt Lake.

Thanks,
