My SO (soon-to-be FF) has three dogs (an australian shepherd, a lab/bassett mix, and a mixed small breed) and a cat. When he moved to the house that he is living in now, he was living with his mom. She lived upstairs, and he stayed downstairs (the house is built into the side of a hill, so the downstairs is somewhat like a furnished basement, although the one side isn't underground). The dogs stayed up there with her.

Unfortunately, his mother has since passed away. My SO spends time up there with the animals, but his bedroom is still downstairs, etc. Whenever I would come over, we would stay upstairs and pet the dogs for a short time, but then go downstairs for most of the time while I was visiting (his movie room is down there, etc).

I am moving in with him in just a couple of days. We have decided to move our bedroom upstairs, and spend most of our time up there, since there is more sun, and also since it is much less cold and damp. Of course, this will also be great for the dogs, because I'm sure that they would love as much human interaction as possible. We would like to all be a family.

I spent some time at his house during this past week, and I stayed upstairs with the dogs so that they would get used to me. My SO was at work, so I was watching TV in the living room. I was sitting on his leather recliner, and I started itching all over. I was puzzled, but thought that it might be coincidence. The next day, I sat there again, and it was the same thing, but worse. I was trying to take a nap, but I was so itchy that I couldn't get any rest. There was no rash, but it was driving me crazy. I mentioned it to my SO, and he told me that one of the dogs (the lab/bassett) sleeps in that chair a lot.

Then, he went to vacuum the dog hair off the couch (he is training them to not go up on it, which we had already agreed upon before all of this, but they aren't really getting the concept yet), and I guess he stirred it all up, because I started getting a scratchy throat and a slight cough. It lasted for a couple of hours. A day later, I developed the same thing, even though I don't remember him vacuuming then.

It is just so weird, because my family had dogs when I was little, and I never had any issues. Coincidentally, we actually had both australian shepherds and labs. I also have a dog now, but he is supposedly a hypoallergenic breed. We had a cat up until about two years ago, but I don't believe that it's cats, since his cat doesn't sleep in that chair.

I am so scared that this will get worse over time (since all of my past allergies have done this). We have agreed that he will clean the entire area that they live in, and that we will have them groomed more often. He will also clean the leather recliner, but I may never be able to sit on that couch, since it is so covered in hair - so once they are fully trained to not get on it, we will probably get another one.

Thoughts? Does anyone have any experience with this? I just really hope that the itching it's something else, or that it will go away when I am there more.

Any chance it could be something from his mom? Perfumes, powders, lotions, etc can rub off onto furniture and stay in the air for awhile.

Do you only get problems sitting on that furniture or all the time in the area the dogs have been? If it is just the furniture, it could be the material or a cleaner or something and you can fix it by getting new furniture (might also make training the dogs to stay off it easier).

I wouldn't just assume it is the dogs. I've found that potty training pads make me sneeze as do certain sorts of cat litter, animal shampoo (even days later), pet bed materials........

You should also try a fresh vacuum bag in case there is something in there (baby powder, perfumed powder, potpouri, etc) making you sneeze.
