Have I chosen a good one?

Hi,

My first post and like many in my situation first diamond ring and most expensive single purchase I have made.

I am happy but can't leave things alone so thought I would ask people's opinion on here of what I have bought so here goes.

I have purchased a 0.70 VS2 round brilliant with excellent cut, polish and symmetry as graded by GIA at a cost of £3800.

Proportions:

Depth 62.5%
Table: 56%
Crown Angle: 36%
Crown Height: 16.0%
Pavilion Angle: 40.8%
Pavilion Depth: 43.0%
Star Length: 50%
Lower Half: 80%
Girdle: Thin to Medium, Faceted, 3.0%
Cullet: None

I know you get what you pay for but just wanted to make sure I had bought something nice.

Thanks

You can plug the numbers into the HCA tool. [under "tools" at the top of the page].
Does it have certification? I wasn't sure if it was GIA or grade in the GIA manner.

edit:
it scored high on the HCA - "good if the price is right".
The next thing to do is a search for similar stones and see if what you paid is a good deal.

The price seems high. Are you keeping this stone and just curious? or can you return it if it is not what you thought?

What color is it?

Like Jimmianne asked, is it returnable?

Yes it is GIA graded and certificated.

It's a D colour.

I have paid a deposit as it is intended as an engagement ring for my gf and set in a platinum 6 claw setting.

I had looked at another of similar grading again GIA but this one was 0.71 and x vg vg again D colour but was £5600! So thought I'd got quite a good deal on the one I went for? It was marked up at £4200 but I managed paid £3800 (well £1000 deposit £2800 to pay).

As for is it returnable I'm not entirely sure, possibly if I bought something else from them maybe? They are currently resizing the ring.

Thanks
Dan

The depth and crown angle is outside of the ideal cut proportion. I would suggest to look more.

Dan, here is the only comparison I could find without doing an extensive search, as i have just gotten home, but it's an example of a super ideal cut, F color. The cut is most important, and F is still colorless. http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3222847.htm

It is difficult to come here with a diamond already purchased and ask if it's a good one, because many people here will tell you that you are better off with an HCA of under 2.0 and to worry less about color.
So if you already have committed to this stone and cannot return it, doing research now will just be frustrating. In a perfect world you could return that diamond and find one with a better cut for less money
If your diamond looks good to you, just love it and don't think anymore about it!

If you are in a postion to do more research and potentially return or exchange your diamond, this is a great place to get help finding another one you like that may be more in sync with the type of stones liked by PSers. =)
