Hi all,

Need some guidance here. I have recently purchased a diamond from Hong Kong for my fiance, and wanted to ask Mark Morrell to set it with Petite Torchiere.

As I'm living in Singapore, I called up both DHL and Fedex to see if they can send, but unfortunately DHL don't allow you to send Diamond and Fedex only insures up to 1000 SGD

Have anyone had similar experience where you have sourced the diamond else where and sent it from Singapore to US for setting?

Really appreciate someone who can help me out here!! :)

Cheers,
G

I am in SG. I''ve bought diamonds from US vendors and have had them set in the US too.

Buying diamonds here to have them set in the US & sent back to SG is very problematic.

The only way for you to send the diamond to the US is through Brinks. They will send it insured for the full value you'd want. Unfortunately they're quite expensive.

PS> make sure you declare with SG Customs beforehand before shipping to the US, otherwise you'd have to pay GST again on the diamond (& setting) when you receive the ring! :knockout: . Also, the party receiving your diamond would also face US Customs duties and taxes.

As an alternative, could you just buy the setting and have someone here set it (without having to send the diamond to MM)?

Thank you so much Phoneix!

Do you know how much it cost approximately? Say 2-3% of the value? :)

Just a couple more questions:
- How do you declare with SG customs? Do you do it at sending time with Brink's?
- Did you use Brink's to send back from US as well?

As for your suggestion to buy the setting upfront, unfortunately as Mark Morrell is a custom setting jeweler, so won't be able to buy the setting separately :(

Thank you so much for the help, at least there's some hope now!

I think the charges depend on the value. How much is your diamond, if you don't mind my asking?

Are you really sure you want to do that? All the charges can really add up to thousands of dollars. Remember you'd also have to reimburse MM for US customs and duties.

As for SG Customs, I'd suggest you go see them and get it all sorted out, before you have the item sent by Brinks.

For the way back, the vendor (ie. MM in this case) can help you send it via FedEx or DHL insured (vendors carry insurance for the stuff they send out).

(Note that it's slightly different for diamonds you buy from the US originally. You can send it back marked "returned for repair" or something similar, so vendor won't have to pay US customs again, presumably they'll already have done that when they first bring the items into the USA. Also, as you've already paid SG GST on the item when you first receive it, you only have to show SG Customs proof of the GST you already pay to obtain an exemption from them when it's resent to you in SG. The procedure is still quite cumbersome. You can google them for more infor. Again, I suggest you go see them to get things sorted out directly, as whatever I say is secondhand).

Good luck.

Re: Have anyone sent diamond from Singapore to US for settin

The diamond is approximately 13000 SGD.

Yeah, I think we originally didn't think it would be so difficult to get a jeweler to just set the ring for us (didnt think of the overseas implication!).

I think we have some further complication as the diamond was bought from HK, so I haven't paid any GST as yet, which will mean when MM sends it back, I will get taxed by SG on GST ;(

Anyway, really appreciate your help! I will also speak to SG customs and find out more in regards to the cost and customs clearance.
