Hey All,

I have an appointment to start my custom ering reset next Friday. I understand the process and the time line. I know what I want and what I dont want (in general), and have pictures to illustrate both.

I would appreciate any advise on questions I should ask, or experiences you all have had that would make you do something differently.

Also, some brilliant pricescoper made a powerpoint for their custom project a while back (I think it was a shared prong band). I loved how it seemed to cover all aspects of the ring, it was very detailed. I would greatly appreciate it if someone knows where the thread is. I think it will help me to think of more questions and be able to be more specific with my vendor.

thanks so much

Hey ponderer, could you share what style you''re after, some pics etc? It sounds like you are quite well prepared already..

You sound pretty prepared to me. I just met with a custom designer yesterday. In addition to knowing the design I wanted and bringing pictures that interested me, I also brought along the stones I had that were going to be set. And, I wore my favorite pieces of jewelry, and my favorite colors of clothes, so she could get a sense of my style and taste. I was pleased to see the personal jewelry she was wearing was just the sort of thing I liked (a nice to have, but certainly not necessary). I asked for examples of her work, and then we proceeded. The next hour and a half flew by.

Have fun!!! You''ll be fine!!!

Hi ponderer and FlyGirl! I, too, just embarked on the "custom quest"! See my thread.

I''m at the "saw the wax" stage. My advice so far is "you can''t be too detailed" in describing what you want. Even though I made my own wax out of candlewax to show the jeweler the general shape I wanted, the wax carver still didn''t get the concept, and I had to reject it.

Most recently I''ve been playing with Google Sketchup to try to draw for them what I want. Sketchup lets you turn the object in 3D, so you can provide pics from all angles. Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time to learn to use Sketchup well, so I haven''t succeeded in making my vision happen using that tool.

I can''t wait to follow your custom quests! Going custom is really exciting, in my opinion.

I currently have a .85 L SI1 marquis. I want to reset it in a custom bezel halo with a wide split shank. I have attached my inspiration photo.

The things I love include: the wide split shank
pave halo with pave continuing 3/4 down the shank

The things I don''t love: the thick bezel, I want it as thin and unintrusive as possible
the ovalness of the halo, I want a more distinct marquis shape

Things I am unsure of: milgrain or no milgrain
melee color; I want it as low as possible to complement my stone
size of the melee
the design of the gallery, I want the ring to sit as low as possible.

Let me know what you all think or if there is anything I am missing.

Orbaya, that is the exact thread i was looking for. Thanks alot!

Well......I had my appointment. And.......Brian the Cutter is fabulous!

The design process was so easy. Its so great to work with someone who knows exactly what will work and what will not. I feel so relieved.

I should have the CAD in a week or less.

Great news ! My apologies I didn''t get back in time to answer your Q''s, but you seem to have the ball rolling. Looking forward to the CAD!
