Have a Setting, Need the Rock

Hi Everyone,

Been creeping around the posts here and finally may need some help sorting out the issue of the "rock".

So pretty sure I have narrowed down the setting to this make in platinum:

and I am trying to figure out what round diamond would be the best fit/price/quality/etc.

Looking for something between 0.8 - 1.0 carats and in between $4000-6000. After that i'm unsure where to go from there in terms of maximizing the remaining visuals to the untrained eye as best I can.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Thanks for the help! I'll take a look into these

Just my opinion but not too fond of the setting. Is it one that your GF has selected or your pick? Plus that's $3,000 more you can spend on an ideal cut diamond.........I'd rather have an amazing 1.00 in a simple setting and select my own setting years later . Then a very expensive setting that might change with the times ...

I was given a little creative license but we went and she tried a few different rings on and she picked something similar to this. She isn't into the more modern simplistic rings nor the halos...more aiming for that classic vibe (and weirdly the first available picture on the JA website is probably the worst view of it). I get your point though about the expense of the setting but grabbing 25% for black friday kinda helps lower the setting cost which is nice.

I may have to go a little smaller on the diamond because of the cost of the setting but that can always be upgraded a few years down the line. :D

I wouldn't get that setting with a small rock. I'll be honest, that setting is going to completely overpower anything under 1.3 carats.

You can see it in the pictures of the real versions. At 1.5-1.3 carats the setting looks balanced. At 1.15 the settings overpowers. Your budget will buy you a .8 stone. That setting is NOT appropriately proportioned for a stone of that size.

Also, you have a very tight budget. Blowing 3,700 on a setting isn't the way to go.

Also the setting has an integrated head, so you CANNOT CHANGE THE DIAMOND SIZE TO UPGRADE THE CENTER STONE.

So in short... your name is "cluelessaboutdiamonds".

We are not clueless, I highly suggest that you listen to our advice about that setting being a poor choice and pick another.

I would advise you to pick one of these settings, as they are a much better choice for the stone size you can afford. And also they will let you get a better stone, as they cost less.

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/14k-white-gold-tailored-diamond-engagement-ring-item-41042 This is the one I recommend. It's 1300 in platinum. And will look fantastic with the sized stone you are looking for. And it gives your stone budget a nice boost. And it is both blingy and classic and feminine. All the things it sounds like she likes.

This setting is SO expensive and you're already talking about upgrading the diamond! The thing about buying a diamond ring is that, without experience you both can be flying a bit blind. It's obvious and kind the desire you have to please your fiance to be but in the long run both of you would more likely end up happier with your choice if you listen to the expert experience and knowledge here. Gypsy has picked some gem settings here, that are so much less of a risk cost wise,as well as appear to fulfil your girlfriend's taste in style.

Since you have gone ring shopping together, she knows what you are up to. Have you considered involving her in the process? It seems she likes a certain setting but that setting is taking up a large portion of the budget. If you involve her, then it's up to her to decide an elaborate setting versus a larger diamond.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I started doubting my selection last night and funny enough Gypsy I had actually just started considering the one you highlighted before getting back to this post. I completely agree on all your other points of the first selection being overpowering/limiting/expense etc and am glad I brought in the experts before making a decision!

Going to review everything and mull it over for a bit but I'll be back again soon (cause i absolutely agree i'm clueless haha)

YAY!!

Let us know what your decision on the setting is, then post your stone budget and let's see what we can find for you! :wavey:

I'm glad to hear that too.

I like the setting Gypsy posted a lot more. I'm obviously not your girlfriend, but think about it.

I also agree the initial one you picked overwhelms a stone under one carat. That's still a great size. It's just the setting.
