Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmooth?

My hairdresser just started doing the keratase version and I may give it a try. It is $250 for 2-4 months of frizz free hair! I had my hair TRed before (Japanese straightening) but this isn't permanent and is actually supposed to be good for your hair. I wanted to get the Brazilian blowout done, but apparently the Keratase Biosmooth works just as well without formaldehyde. Just curious if anyone else has tried this and what they thought of it?
TIA :)

ETA: I've got my names all mixed up sorry, it isn't keratase, it's kerasmooth bio ionic treatment!

My mum's best friend got the Brazilian blow out done in February and it is still smooth and frizz free! Except for the roots that have grown since. It's amazing, her hair was seriously frizzy. Exceptionally thick, wavy..."horses hair" in her own words! However, she says she feels it damaged her hair. She got a dry scalp and brittle hair after getting it done. None of us have noticed, it just looks smooth to us, but she says she can feel it.

Thanks Porridge! That's interesting. I've heard Keratase is easier on the hair. Many people suffered a lot of damage with the japanese straightening, but that isn't supposed to occur with these new treatments. My hairdresser told me I could even color over it a few days later.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

I had the Brazilian Keratin treatment done about 2 weeks ago, and so far I love it!!! I have always had crazy curly, frizzy hair and summer is the absolute worst. That and going to the beach. My hair is so soft, silky and shiny - and it feels like real hair instead of straw. I sat outside yesterday in the 93% humidity, and my hair went flat instead of huge. It was awesome! I got wet in the rain and it dried straight, and it stays straight when I exercise. When I blow it dry, it looks like it has been flat ironed. I have zero frizz, which is major for me. If this lasts for at least 3 months, it's well worth the money in my opinion and I'll have it done again. I have had many straighteners over the years, but my hair has never looked this healthy & shiny, or behaved as well afterwards. I have despised my hair my entire life, but now I actually like it.

So how much does this treatment normally cost?

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

Thanks DeeGee, I think we have the same type of hair. You couldn't pay me to leave the house without it flat-ironed, and humidity is my worst enemy! I've done a bit more reading and I am little concerned that Kerasmooth has a perm solution in it. I think the original brazilian was just a keratin coating but I may be wrong. My stylist is with Aveda, so I guess the idea of no formaldehyde was appealing.

It costs between $250-500 at most places in Ontario.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

My mom gets Keratase (I think that is the one) and LOVES it. It lasts until her hair grows out. I forget how often she goes. I know the worst part for her is you can't wash your hair, put it in a pony tail, or even behind your ears for 3-4 days. If it was cheaper I would totally do it. Seems like a miracle!

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

I had the one that is the thick coating of keratin, and then they flat-iron it for what seems like an hour, and I couldn't wash it for 3 days. I think the stylist just called it a Brazilian keratin treatment, but it did have a small percentage of formaldehyde - 2% I think. I'm kicking myself for not taking a good before picture. People are still coming up to me at work wanting to feel my hair. It's funny!

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

I did it about a month ago & it is the best thing I have ever done! The Keratin is not really a straightener, it is more of a conditioning treatment that makes your hair less frizzy & smoother. My hair was always frizzy mess, now it's sooo smooth. I don't even use any hair products before I blow dry it anymore, it has cut my drying time in half and I hardly ever use a flat iron anymore.
Just make sure you use the special shampoo for it as the regular shampoos contain sodium chloride and that will strip the keratin from your hair. Tacori's mom is right about the (worst) part that you can't wash your hair, put it in a pony tail or even behind your ears but some treatments they have now are only 24-48 hours.

This is the product I used Simply Smooth - http://www.americanculturehair.com/ss_temp/pages/ind_v1.html and here is a video of how the process is done http://www.vimeo.com/4267217

TOTALLY worth the money if you ask me; I will definitely be doing it again when it grows out.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

I had the Brazilian Blowout done to my hair just this past Thursday. So far, I'm loving how it looks. I was able to wash my hair right away and didn't have to worry about pins or ponytails. I also like that, unlike the japanese straightening I had done years ago, I don't have to deal with curly/frizzy re-growth while the ends were straight. The Brazilian Blowout washes out over a 12 week process so there is no line demarcation on your head.

My curly hair is definitely smoother (think loose waves), shinier, and frizz-free. It still has volume, which is great. I didn't like how flat my hair was after the japanese straightening. I've washed my hair twice (with a sodium-free shampoo) since my appointment and have needed no product in my hair. Blow-drying time was cut in half, at least.

My only complaint is that I had some skin irritation by my temple and tops of ears that is finally going away. I googled skin reactions to the Brazilian Blowout and couldn't really find anything online. It might be just a one-off reaction I had since I have sensitive (rosacea) skin.

ETA: It's my understanding the Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT) is the process that has formaldehyde in it. The Brazilian Blowout supposedly has none.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

I am going to get a Brazilian Blowout in 2 weeks, I'm excited.

My stylist did it on a few cases of hair like mine and thinks it will work very well. I have really thick, coarse hair and it tends to frizz easily. She noted it would prob not make it 'really straight' but would take 90% of the wave out and would decrease frizz to basically 0. I can do the rest on my own with a flat iron or curling iron in 5 min then...instead of 40 the way it takes now.

re: formaldehyde... I think the Blowout has none BUT they did not recommend that pregnant or bf'ing mothers do it which is why I have had to wait til now. So we weren't sure why they said it was chemical free but didn't recommend it for PG or BF moms. The company said they just hadn't tested it on those groups so better safe than sorry.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

A friend of mine had a Brazilian blowout done about three weeks ago. She has super thick, curly hair, and it looks awesome after the blowout. It's still very thick, and you can tell that she's a curly haired girl walking around with straightened hair, but not in a bad way. She says it's amazing.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

I had the kerastase treatment done on Thursday. On a whim, and I couldn't wash my hair for three days afterwards. That nearly killed me, but I stayed strong.

Have to say, after two washes, it doesn't look so hot. It just looks the same as it ever did. I'm so disappointed. I'm having it done again, because my hairdresser swears this never happens, but in the meantime, it's just my usual wiry hair. Sigh. It works for EVERYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET. Why not me?!

So my tip would be - get a money back guarantee.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

Thanks for all the responses!

Jennifer, I hope it comes out better the second time around. I had to have my TR done twice too bc my hair was pretty resistant.
I can't seem to find anyone here in Southern Ontario that does the BKT or BB...they all seem to be offering the Kerasmooth which doesnt contain formaldehyde but does have a small amount of perm solution in it which I dont know how I feel about.
Im going to do a bit more research, but if I get it done Ill post pics !

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

niccia I am surprised you can't find BB in Southern CA! It's all the rage right here now in N.CA and we are usually 6+ months behind S.CA in all types of these things it seems. Good luck!

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

Jennifer, do you have virgin (non-chemically treated) hair? I've read people with processed hair seem to have better results, at least with the BKT and the BB.

Niccia, I googled Brazilian Blowout + Toronto and many options came up. Are you close to the GTA? You can also try the 1-800 # on the Brazilian Blowout website and ask them to recommend a local salon.

Mara, I'm assuming Niccia is in Ontario, Canada, not Ontario, California.

My mom had the Keratin treatment done last week and so far she loves it. I guess it's really easy to do her hair now, she can blow it out in about 10 minutes instead of the 30-45 minutes it used to take. I was shocked by how smooth her hair was at first. I've never seen my mom's natural hair, she has always dyed and relaxed it but she describes it as being super curly but not pretty curls and lots of frizz. Luckily my dad has poker straight hair and I ended up with lots of pretty wavy hair. :))

ETA: Her salon charged about $300 (I think it can be anywhere from $250-400 where she goes) and then she bought the shampoo and whatever else goes along with the product line they use.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

Thanks CDNinNYC! I may have to go into TO to get it done (I am about 3 hours away). Or I may just give the kerasmooth a go..my stylist loves it but she hasn't been doing them for that long which makes me a little weary.
Mara, yes I am in Ontario, Canada...I didnt even know there was an Ontario, CA!

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

Burberry, Im glad your mum is enjoying it. You were very lucky to end up with the best genes from both sides. My mum has beautiful wavy curls and my dad is straight-haired. I got half and half with a lot of volume and frizz!

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

I just heard about the BB last week an am seriously thinking about it. My salon in Houston charges $250. I also looked through my shampoos at home to see if any had sodium cloride and surprising my cheapo Tresseme did not have it, and my super expensive special occasion shampoo Sebastian did. Although the Sebastian does a great job of keeping my hair straight...I can wash it every other day instead of everyday. So I'm debating if I should spend the money or just use the Sebastian shampoo more often.

OMG, sorry that is what I get for reading too fast!

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

Hey Appletini!

Feel comfortable sharing your salon? I am in H town as well and am in b/w places. The last place I went charged $400 for the Brazilian Blowout.

Would definitely try it for $250. I hate drying my hair.

China Cat, its Satori Heights on Washington. Marika is one of their certified stylists. I was asking her about it when I was in there last week.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

Thanks Appletini! Will let you know if I decide to do it.

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

Just wanted to update this thread with my experience. I just got the Brazilian Keratin Treatment this weekend, and I am loving it. I have gotten a lot of comments on how shiny it is. Even in the humid (for Colorado) weather recently, my hair has behaved itself very well over the past few days. I was even out in some light rain without an umbrella yesterday, and I was thrilled to see that my hair had stayed smooth and straight when I got back inside. I am still blowing it out to get rid of the curl, but it's easier now than it was before. My hair also gets frizzy overnight most nights, but I woke up today to frizz-free hair, and running a flat iron over it was enough to make it presentable.

I'll definitely be doing the BKT again!

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

Hi Kittybean
thanks for the update. Can you let me know how you like it in a month or so?
After doing some more research Ive decided to put up with my frizzy hair for now. My stylist has only been doing it for a month or so, so I am going to wait and see what she thinks of it a few months down the road.
Thanks again for everyone's replies :)

Re: Has anyone tried a Brazilian blowout or Keratase Biosmoo

I got the Brazilian Blowout today and so far I love it.

Basically when dried it looks mostly the same as when I flat ironed it before. But it's softer and smoother overall. And when it's wet, it is about 90% straighter than it used to be. My stylist blowdried it in about 5 min just with hand combing and it looked like I had just spent 30 minutes flat ironing it. Then she took the flat iron and swiped fat chunks of it and it was totally smoothed out in less than 5 minutes. So instead of 45min-1 hour trying to get it straight with blow drying and flat iron now I can just let it air dry overnight and flat iron it in 5 min. Also it's just that wee bit straighter and silkier than before.

I would have to get it done about 3x a year so I'll have to determine how it wears, how fast it washes out (they say 3-5mo but depends on hair) and if it's worth it cost-wise over time, but for now I am really happy I did it and jazzed that now I don't have to spend an hour each time doing my hair, esp with the baby! Oh also the BB is formaldehyde free and supposedly chemical free but I don't know how much I believe that. What it does can't be magic without some type of chemical ?!?!

I paid $200 for the intro price (most salons are doing this) and I think it's $300 or $350 regularly. You can get it wet immediately as well--what infuses the protein into the hair follicle is the 450 degree flat iron against the hair. Also you do not have to use the BB products, you can use any sulfate free shampoo and any conditioner. Pureology is an example of a sulfate free shampoo, which I already use.
