I own a Brian Gavin stone but my bf wanted to see the stone before it was set. We then decided to have the stone set locally. After looking at many posts regarding settings, I am debating whether I should send my stone back to have it re-set by BGD. Has anyone gone through the process of sending their diamond back to set/re-set?

A few questions:
-I know shipping cost is on the customer. How much does it typically run?
-Is the stone insured while being set by BGD?
-Do you pay shipping again (both ways) when you need your ring re-rhoded (I want a white gold setting)?

Thank you for all your help!

You can look up rates for Registered Mail on the post office website. Insurance will be added to equal the value of the ring. I've done it several times and I'd say it is usually between $30-50 depending on the value of the items I sent. You will have to ask BG if they will insure for a reset. You would have rhodium plating done locally. That is not something you'd send the ring back for.

$30 - 50 one way sounds reasonable. Yea it'd make sense to get it re-rhoded locally.

My main concern with my current setting is the prongs seem a little bulkier than I'd like. Most of the BGD prongs look a lot more delicate.

I am looking to get the simple six prong setting. Does anyone own a setting with a six prong head from BGD?

I am also really OCD when it comes to having my prongs aligned with the... facets of the diamond? Not sure how to explain it. My current setting is SLIGHTLY off and it's bothering me a little. I don't think anyone outside of PS would know what I am talking about. My mom thinks I'm crazy when I went back to my jeweler and told them to "turn" the diamond so the prongs align to the stone... But one of the prongs still look about 2 degrees off to me............

I would talk to BGD about sending the diamond back to them since you originally purchased it from their inventory. I think it did cost me less than $50 for registered, insured mail through USPS but my diamond was from another vendor.

No problems w/ my 4 prong claw setting thus far--they can align the arrows any way you want. Very happy w/ my setting!

I did call BGD. Shipping is approx $80 roundtrip, which is pretty reasonable.

I need a six prong setting to replace my current setting since my bf loves the six prong look. The problem I don't like the peg head of their Tiffany settings. The only one I see with an intergrated head is this one:

BGD told me this is not made in-house so the quality is not as good as their other settings. I figured there's something going on since the price difference is huge between this setting and their tiffany setting (runs about $500 more). Now I don't know what to do...

I sent my diamond to BGD USPS registered/insured mail. I had coverage through jewelers mutual. They set it and then sent it back FedEx overnight (hold for pickup)

When I needed to get my ring resized, BGD sent me FedEx labels for overnight shipping (covered by BGD...the cost round trip was around $100 I think? I believe it depends on value of the item)

Have you thought about any other settings? I personally really like the BGD Tiffany replica (it looks integrated?) What about other vendors? BGD doesn't have a lot of six prong settings...

Yea they quoted me $80 for sending it in and back.

It's a difficult decision because we talked about upgrading down the road (~5 years) so I am bit reluctant to spend a lot on the setting. Not only that, I love the simple solitaire look. Like many others here I adore the the Mark Morrell settings but it's way out of my current price range.

Who would've thought choosing a solitaire setting would be this difficult! What other vendors are recommended?

How big is your stone... there are a couple of second hand MWM settings available.

My stone is 1.22 ct. I think the diameter is 6.90 mm.

I would love to consider a second hand Mark Morrell.

The one you linked to is probably the same as what you have now, just a stock Stuller setting. It sounds like you just need to use the setting you have but have someone turn the stone and refine the prong tips. No point in getting another setting almost just like it especially since you plan to upgrade. Spend the money on the final setting!

yeah...I would not switch your current setting for the stock BGD setting...it is probably very similar! Especially if you are planning to upgrade!
