I''m frustrated with Ikea bookcases being so poorly made, so I decided to look elsewhere. Home Decorator''s collection seems to have nice furniture, but it does say assembly is required (to be exact, it says "Easy Assembly") so I''m nervous that it may just be an overpriced Ikea. Here''s the bookcase I like: http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Oxford_Single_Bookcase_with_Cabinet/150/

Anyone own furniture from here? How is the quality?

Yes, I have a file cab and a sideboard from there. I love them! Great prices. Looks SOOO much nicer than IKEA's stuff. Nice details. Very easy to put together (every piece has a letter sticker so it makes so much sense). Plus they are always having sales. I get a lot of compliments on my sideboard. I have had them for a few years now and they still look great. I would order from them again.

ETA: My pieces are white so I am not sure what their wood grain looks like.

CrownJewel, I love that bookcase! That''s definitely something I''d get if we were looking. I''ve never actually heard of them until now but from what I saw while browsing the site, the pieces look really nice.

Is it hard ordering furniture online though? I''d like to be able to see the piece(s) in person first, just to check out the actual color, finish, texture, etc.

There is a chair and ottoman that I was thinking about ordering from them. I saw it at Macy''s and it was something like $850 and only came in one color and then I saw it in their catalog for $479 (or something) and it came in 11 different fabrics, including the color I saw at Macy''s.

I also found a couple of other pieces that were more money in other areas, but cheaper in their catalog.

I am still deciding if I should go ahead with my purchase though.

We actually have a store in my city. The upholstered goods look incredibly great! The patterns match the welting is straight...the weight is decent. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. But the scale would not be appropriate for a huge room with high ceilings. Refer to the measurements...and do a trial run on your piece. The are most famous for their rugs.

When you go in a retail DC store...it is displayed nicely...there are tons of items. NO pressure, and the staff is usually very passionate about the merchandise.

They also carry bathroom vanities that are out of the ball park cool. You know like an old side board and then they add a sink. Or a very modern style with a vessel sink and modern facets. You get the facet and hardware along with the cabinet and sink. Many styles to choose from. But plug and play.

Neat! Thanks for your comments everyone...this helps A LOT (now I know "a lot" is actually two words).

DKS, our entire apt is about the size of a postage stamp, so I took your advice and am paying attention to the dimensions. The "living room" aka living room/office/dining room is small but has high ceilings. I guess I should take a look at their return policy too, if there is one at all.

Zoe, yes I think buying furniture without seeing it is scary, but I''m desperate (FI is smack in the middle of business school so his books and papers tornado around me and I can''t STAND disorganization or clutter). Currently we only have one small bookcase which is full. I can''t spend a fortune on a bookcase, but I have not had any success at Ikea. Most other stores are too expensive. I have been browsing craigslist.com for used bookcases, but even if I find something, I don''t have a truck (or even a car) to go pick it up. (Sigh).

Tacori, how do you find out about their sales?

Butterfly, let me know if you decide to go ahead with the purchase. I want to know how it turns out.

Thanks again everyone!

They e-mail me coupons (and sometimes mail them to me too) but I have bought from them before. Maybe their website is advertising a sale or sometimes you can find "coupons" by doing a google search. I think you will be very happy if you decide to buy from them.

DKS, I like their bathroom vanities too. They are owned by home depot right???

Tacori...I think you are right...there is some correlation with HD. I didn''t know it but as I was leaving I asked for the latest catalog, and she mentioned their parent company. I had completely forgotten what she said. I think it was HD as you mentioned. I was caressing a vessel sink vanity and wasn''t paying much attention. (I heart those!!!)

Yeah, I need to get out more often.

My mother doesn''t go to Home Depot...She goes to Home Depoe...as well as Office Depoe ...Argghhh!

DKS, you are so funny! I believe there is a link on the HD''s website (that is where I got the impression they were owned by the same company). Vessel sinks are pretty cool!
