I bought a setting at a local jewelery store. It was a size 5.5 or 6 (I am a size 4.5). It has .85 pave diamonds (not micropave) and it is an integrated head (basket?) style. The setting was made for a 2 carat center stone. I am putting a 1.1-1.2 center stone in it. I wanted to have the ring recast in my size and for my size center stone. The jeweler told me that even if he sent it off to the manufactuer they would recast it in the same size it was and then resize it to a 4.5. Also, they wouldn''t cast it for a different size center stone but would just trim down the prongs until they fit my center stone. I got the feeling he DID NOT want to have it recast (even thought I was willing to pay more). Has anyone heard of this or was he just trying to get me to buy the setting he had at the store? FYI-he did send it off to be "re-cast", I haven''t seen it yet and am not even sure what I''m getting back at this point.

he sounds like he just wanted you to buy a setting he already had in stock. I had a jeweler tell me something like this similiar. I have a size 4 and he had a stock half eternity in size 7 I said that I was nervous that it would not be fitting right and looked right if it just went to sizing.. Well we bought it anyways, and I was sooo disappointed as it had to be resized and fixed three times if not more, I stopped at three times.

Lies. All lies...he just wants you to buy what he has in stock. Don''t buy from him a 1 ct stone WILL NOT fit properly in a ring made for a 2ct.

I certainly got the feeling I was being lied to but I don''t know anything about how jewelery is made so I hate to jump to conclusions. I took the setting to another jewelery store (for a second opinion) and they said I need to insist that it is recast in my size and that there is no way that setting could fit a 1.2 carat stone. I believed this jewelery store and insisted my ring was recast. But, I was kind of curious what the jewelery experts on here thought!! Thanks for the reply.

It is to late. I already bought the setting and all sales are final. It is a fluke that I even found out the setting was made for a 2 carat diamond (yes the prongs were huge but they told me the manufacturer makes them like this on purpose to fit any size/shape stone). When I took it to the other jewelry store to get a second opinion on having the ring resized she asked me what size diamond I was buying and then told me the ring was NOT made for a 1.2 and it would not work. That''s when I knew I was in trouble. I''m anxiously awaiting to see what my setting will look like. I think they actually had it recast in my size and fixed the prong problem but I really don''t know. They give me the run around and for all I know they just sent it off to have it resized and to have the prongs trimmed.

I am so sorry D&T to hear that. I am a size 3 (actually - I found out today I was a 2.5 to 2.75 - no wonder why all my rings spin). I have been to several jewelers - all warned me that resizing down more than 2 sizes will result in an oval ring.

Don''t take it if it isn''t satisfactory. Regardless of their return policy they need to provide you with what was promised. So if the stone doesn''t fit/look right-make them do it again. And again. Or insist that they refund you if they can''t; and threaten to take the story to local media if they won''t refund you.

Thanks for the advice Neatfreak. I won''t take the setting if everything doesn''t look right. I''ve already warned my credit card company that I think something might be fishy. I''m still hopefull that my setting will turn out right.

NeedBling- Definitely don''t back down, if the quality of the "redo" doesn''t look right to you.

Well, it took over a month to get my setting back from being "recast". And, SURPRISE, the ring did not look right. I happened to have an appt. with an appraiser to look at my diamond I bought online that same day so I took my setting along. I had her take a look at it and she said she could definetly tell they resized it instead of having it recast as they claimed. She also said it was obviously made for a much larger diamond than the 1.20 carat I was planning on using. She showed my why it would not look right once the diamond was set, not that I needed any convincing. I was able to CONVINCE him to give me my money back minus a restocking fee. What a joke, though, the reasons he told me he could not give me a refund included because "he had the ring recast to fit my 4.5 finger size and it would be very unlikely that another person with my finger size would buy the ring"----I told him to resize it again later. Apparently he didn''t think I knew that rings could be resized up or down! Also, he refused to refund me the sales tax because he claimed he had already paid it to the government and couldn''t get it back. Obviously I knew the government would refund him and when I told him so he said then I should consider he wanted to keep the extra $100. for his troubles!!!! His troubles???? At one point I directly asked him if he believed the ring had been recast and he wouldn''t answer my question. Hmmmm. Apparently, he didn''t want to lie directly to my face. Also, the craftsmanship wasn''t perfect on the setting to begin with but I was willing to accept it because I''ve been looking at settings for over a year before I fell in love with this one. But by the time they trimmed the prongs down and resized it the setting looked even worse. I''m lucky I got any money back at all because my receipt clearly stated that all sales were final. But in the end I feel like I lucked out because now I''m looking at getting a custom ring (very similar) from Whiteflash and I feel I''ll be much happier with the end result!!!

Well done. :)

Care to state the name of the company so other can be aware?

I hate it when people think consumers will go with whatever they say because they are in the business. Good Job! Your ring will look fantastic with whiteflash.
