Has anyone gone too big and regretted it?

I''ve heard about the dreaded DSS but I''m just curious if anyone''s ever just felt that their diamond was just too big? Or do you just get used to it at some point?

Thanks in advance!

Hehe I doubt many people here will say their stone is too big...

I know...It''s just that when I was trying on one carat stones, they just seemed too big to me. I feel like I should go bigger in case DSS happens to me but then what if I never get used to it? All I know is that the .8 looked small and the 1.0 looked big. I''m looking at .9-1.0 right now but should I be looking at bigger stones if I can afford it?

No. You should look at what YOU are comfortable wearing, not necessarily what you can afford. Your own comfort is what matters. But if you can buy with a company that has an upgrade policy you can always trade in later if DSS sets in...

please keep in mind your eyes will get used to the size over time .....

Size is such a personal choice -- just as shape, color, setting style etc etc

Go with your gut -find a stone you love and are comfortable with, enjoy it and don''t worry about the future...
or, make sure the company has an upgrade policy (just in case!)

It''s strange in the morning when I put my ring on it looks big but then as the day progresses it shrinks.

Could there be a strange gravitational force acting on the diamond?

I hope this doesn''t happen in other arenas of life!

Not at all.

I''d definitely go with a carat if you can. You''ll be glad later when you are older that you did!

It all depends on when you will be wearing your ring. I wore my original 0.18 ct e-ring 24/7 for years. My current 1.5 ct ring has to be taken off for many activities. In fact, I wear it quite a bit less in the summer due to gardening and other summery activities. The bigger the diamond, and the more delicate the setting, the more careful you have to be. But it sure is nice having a nice, sparkly diamond.

I think that 0.8 ct to 1 ct would be a great size that would serve you well for many years.

are we still talking about diamonds here?

Sorry, couldn''t resist with that title.

I don''t think you''ll regret getting a 1 carat diamond. If the .8 feels small, a 1 carat is probably bound to shrink up on you! If you really feel uncomfortable with a 1 carat, don''t go bigger, but I think a 1 carat is a great size. It''s not that much bigger than a .8 carat, so you''ll get used to it!

My e-ring looked positively HUGE on me at first...it''s funny, even though the ring still fits I know my fingers must have gotten bigger, because now my diamond looks like a tiny lil'' speck on me!

I do not understand, is this a trick question? Just kidding.

Wear what you like and feel comfy with, but know a carat is a nice size but not so big you should be concerned. You will get used to it! Trust me on this one.

Newbie here... wish I found this site sooner. The information posted by folks here is incredibly informative!! Thank you!!!

Quick question (forgive me if it''s obvious): what does DSS stand for?

Thanks!!

Oh my stars, I totally agree it just couldn''t happen. LOL

Well, y''all know there is the possibility that I could say something here since I wanted a 1.4 and ended up with 1.6, and it still looks SO much bigger than most of the diamonds around me. So I am still a little self conscious in certain situations. However, I am so much happier with the ring now that it is set in the delicate setting with a thin, sparkly wedding band. The diamond plus the Memoire band with 10 pointers was just too much for me. (I like the Memoire band alone, though.)

But I wore a 1 ct. stone for 30 years, so I do not think that is too large in most places.

Diamond Shrinkage Syndrome

Welcome!

Thanks!

And I love the Seinfeld quote, btw!

Thanks everyone! I think I''m just going to have to try on more rings to make sure.

Thanks! I love it, summed up my feelings at the time!

Actually, I have, but before the ring shipped. I''m switching from a 1.06 J SI1 to something in the 0.8-0.9 range with higher color and clarity, but same price range.

Why?

I live in Germany, where most women don''t get diamond solitaires at ALL, and the ones who have them tend to have relatively small stones - 0.5ct is a big stone around here - and stupid expensive! The only place I''ve seen solitaires that might be over 1ct are at the opera, on older women''s hands, or in wealthy parts of Munich. I''m going higher color and clarity because my fiance just insists on spending the money - who am I to deny him?

One of my high school friends who lives in London opted for a 0.9ct E IF princess, because her fiance just insisted on sinking at least that much into the ring, but she didn''t want to feel too conspicuous. She said that her rock looks huge among her circle there, but small back in our hometown in central Texas.

If Europeans think I''m a bit gaudy, and Texans think I''m a bit plain, then I feel I''ve struck the right balance

If you love the big bling and have the means, however, bling on!

When I got my 1 carat diamond it looked huuuuuuuuuuuuge to begin with. Honestly, I used to catch my breath for the first few days after my fiance proposed, every time I caught sight of it.

That was in August... and now it just doesn''t look big at all to me anymore (sadly). I kind of liked that ''It''s HUGE!'' feeling. :)

I wouldn''t hesitate to recommend that you get 1 carat, as those shiny little stones have a real tendency to get smaller the longer we wear them...

It''ll seem big initially... but I promise you''ll soon get used to it. :)

[Boredom at work] + [Access to Flash] + [Too much chocolate cake] = [Bad cartoons and animations]

Scientific fact.

My thoughts on the whole "Can a diamond be too big" issue is yes, but it''s a very personal opinion. I live in Europe and it''s just as mandielee says, smaller diamonds and a lot less bling are the norm here. It''s a look I prefer. My avatar gives a pretty good idea of the size of diamond my girlfriend will be wearing.

Please note: I live in real Europe. That is to say: England. Not some pretend Europe country like Germany.

Um - me too!

But as you''re English, I''m surprised you described yourself as European... I would never do that!! :)

I just said I live in real Europe, I never said I was European. I''m much better than that. I''m South African.

*ETA* I just noticed Mara's upgrade - that's a big old bit of bling!

Plastic bling... but still bling. :)
