I am trying to figure out the best option. AAA Membership Discount brings it a little under Costco, but Hotwire is like half of both. I've gotten hotel rooms through that site but never a rental car.

yes and it worked out well...like expedia or orbitz...you reserve and then pay when you pick up...although, with one of these services (i can't remember which), they ran out of the car that was reserved and tried to make me upgrade but I argued that I had a reservation and they gave me the price quoted, but it was a pain to go through that.

Apparently I've done it in the past, because my login still worked. I knew I did hotels before, I didn't recall the rental going through it. So it mustve gone ok because I recall no nightmares. They have the hold on my card for the amount, but it's not processed.

Yes! Its fine, but just know that you will likely end up with the one car in the category that no one wants, due to such reasons as appearance or gas mileage. Last time they told me the only car they had left was a bright red VW bug. Not great for wild west ranch driving, but the perfect red if I were looking for a gemstone, lol!

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy the insurance through hotwire. Its a scam and is not insurance through the rental car company, but only a third party insurer which covers you only after your own insurance has paid...so like supplemental really.

Yes, and we had no problems. The only problem is that you can't pick your rental company, which we really didn't care about. We got a great deal, and actually when we picked up the car got upgraded to a Mustang for $7 more a day.

Oh I NEVER get the rental company's "insurance" because my own policy covers me in a rental as if it's my own car. So I am good there. I think I got Alamo, and I've rented with them no problem in the past. If I had gone through AAA it would've been Hertz, but would've been like $50 more easily. I went with "intermediate" and that should be sufficient. Only two of us will have luggage anyway, and the rest of the time four of us won't have more than our purses.

Yes. I always rent from Hotwire. Have used them many many times and never had a single issue.
