Has anyone developed Tinnitus after getting a MRNA vaccine?

My husband has developed Tinnitus nine months ago..He went to an ENT specialist..He ran tests..Every thing checked out fine..The doctor put him on a run of steroids..It seemed to get a little better but he still has it. I’ve always had ..or that I can remember have Tinnitus. It is just something I live with without concern. It can best be described as white noise. I have no idea when it began but it doesn’t bother me. It’s only when my husband starts talking about it that I’m aware of mine. He now doesn’t want to get the second Bivalent booster that’s available to us because we are over 65..He’s going to cancel his. I’m still going to get mine. I would be very interested to see if anyone has developed Tinnitus after getting any of the vaccines? Any healthcare providers with input would be very much appreciated..Thank you!

Hi MamaBee. No one in my family got the vaccine and I don't know anyone who did that developed tinnitus, but I do follow several doctors on twitter and have seen tinnitus reported as a side effect. Along with Bell's Palsy and Shingles. I won't go into my reasons, because it is controversial, but I would hold off on the vaccine if it were me. I don't hear anymore about serious C-19 cases (I'm not saying there are none, but the urgency has appeared to have died down). I think it is prudent to wait until more comes out about the vaccine. Several of my friends in their 50's, 60's and 70's are not getting any boosters.

Thank you @momofive..He said he may wait until fall when they come out with the updated booster.

I have definitely developed tinnitus, in the last couple of years, but can’t really say with certainty when it began with regard to the Vaccine. My work space isn’t the quietest and if it’s loud it doesn’t bother me as much. It’s very annoying. :/

Sorry to hear this.
Hope they find out what's going on and fix it.

I've never gotten Tinnitus.
I thought I had it once, but it turned out to be my husband whining. :lol-2:
Now I know what all you poor wives have to put up with.

I'm gonna get the new booster/vaccine too.

I did. Mine is a high pitch frequency. I've had it a year and a half now, developed after my booster. It is terrible. No solution or cure. I'm sorry he's going through this.

I didn’t develop tinnitus, but I did end up with vertigo after a covid vaccine. The theory is that a dormant virus became active and affected my inner ear. I wonder if your husband’s tinnitus was caused by something similar.

Thankfully I’m better now, but like your husband I’m nervous about future vaccines.

I’m glad you’re better..He did have a bout with vertigo too..but we attributed that to him using an inversion table. That resolved..TG

I've gotten every vaccine and no tinnitus for me, or any of my employees (45 of them) who are fully vaccinated, and range from their late 20's to late 60's. Or at least I should say, that if any of us have it, we don't know it!

Thanks @Lookinagain..That’s good news I can share with my husband. I think if the hum is very low it’s not something that would be easily recognized. Mine is low..TG..It’s hard to tell how bad my husband’s is because he tends to blow up symptoms and analyses everything.

Has anyone developed tinnitus after a vaccine? Sure. That doesn’t mean they developed it because of a vaccine. That’s actually the challenge of clinical trials. A large population is going to have all sorts of things happen during a given time period. Heart attacks, tinnitus, broken legs, etc. Doesnt mean a vaccine given in that time period caused it. With a clinical trial or aftermarket adverse event reporting, the challenge is sorting out signal of a true effect versus normal background levels.

I had mine about 6 years ago. It got better and better and went completely after a couple of years. After my Pfizer (so not MRNA) shot, I got very loud tinnitus again and although it's not as loud now, it hasn't gone away. It's stayed the same pitch for about a year now. Drives me INSANE!

Have had it since my 20s and the vaccines had no effect on it. The weather does however and it has been singing louder than normal the last few days.

I believe Pfizer is mRNA as is Moderna.

Yes. The viral vector vaccines were AZ and Janssen

I've had the whole constellation of vaccines - a total of five doses, including two AZ, two basic Moderna and one bivalent Pfizer (at this point I'm boosting every six months). Everyone around me is also vaccinated and boosted. No significant side effects for anyone.

I do have the occasional mild tinnitus, but that's because my immune system is trying to eat into my brain and it's been present since before the pandemic. And I do have a trick for that tinnitus which works for me. It's not a cure, afaik it doesn't work for everyone and the relief provided lasts differently for anyone, but it's super simple and worth the try.

So basically what you do is you place your hands over your ears like this:

And then use your index fingers to tap firmly on the back of your neck for several seconds. You'll hear something kind of like a high tone drumming. I have no idea how it works, but it works for me and gets rid of the tinnitus with immediate effect.

Me too.. I do wonder if it’s allergy related..

This is so interesting. I will tell him to try it. I did it. It works for a few seconds but comes back. How long do you do it?

When I first read about it, it was suggested to do it for 20-30 seconds. I think. It's been a while now, and I can easily be misremembering. For me, personally, it takes a lot less. 5-10 taps total. But my case is mild and I'm on medication to keep my immune system in check, so that can totally be a factor.

Thank you @Lookinagain..I did read everything online that I could before my eyes blurred. My husband also has a little hearing loss but he will be 72 in June. He’s older than me..haha..It could be hearing loss due to age..We argued about getting the vaccine but I had to sign off. He would blame me if it got worse after the vaccine. I’m keeping my appointment to get it. He cancelled his. He will think about getting the updated version in the fall.

Tinnitus is the brain's response to a peripheral deficit, it's the brain adjusting the volume "up there" to make up for what it perceives it isn't hearing. As long as it isn't accompanied by other symptoms; e.g., vertigo, change in hearing, fullness in the ear, it's usually something benign that we have to live with. Stress can also make tinnitus worse. Unilateral tinnitus should always be investigated.

Thank you @DAF..I think he has it more in one ear..He did get either an MRI or CT scan..I can’t remember which one…but it was negative..TG
Mine has been humming or as @Karl_K aptly described as “singing”..Fortunately it doesn’t bother me too much..I wish it would go away but I feel fortunate that it’s not like the sound other people with tinnitus have to endure.
I don’t think my husband’s is too bad..because he would go back to the doctor if it was unbearable.

I've had 5 Moderna shots so far. I do have a little mild tinnitus, but I had that before the shots. So at least the shots didn't make it worse, but I can't say if they can cause it or not.

That is so weird. I just tried it, and it worked, at least for now.
