I was recently shopping for a pair of 2ct - 3ct (total weight) diamond studs. I must have been feeling particularly courageous because I found myself in Harry Winston a few weekends ago, having always been a bit intimidated by the store.

I am glad I went in; I saw the prettiest stud earrings in a unique setting.

Have any of you seen this setting up close? Looking from the setting''s profile, the basket is actually tilted 30 degrees or so; I think this adjusts for any drooping on the earlobe. In terms of pricing, 2ct studs were in the high $20k-mid $30K, depending on quality.

I didn''t end up getting my earrings from there, but I can''t get those HW ones out of my mind!

Very cool idea!

The post is not centered on the basket, rather it is positioned where the diamond is closest.
This uses gravity to ensure it remains at the right angle.
Very clever.

I can't imagine it would cost much more (especially compared to the stone's cost) to make all studs like this in the future; after all it's just an idea.
I wonder if that idea could be patended.

I love simple clever things like this.

This isn't new at all, and there are many 'strategies' to straighten heavy (or not to heavy) stud earrings depending on their size - off center and/or bent pegs, beads and... this sort of thing. Even on very small studs off center pegs make a world of sense if the earrings need to stay in a certain position (i.e are not round). I don't understand much why diamond studs get the least thoughtful settings... almost as a rule

The offset baskets are quite fool proof, if set low enough - the ones in the picture seem quite a bit deeper than the HW ones. And there's a trick with these settings - if your ears do support the weight to begin with, with these settings the stones end up facing the sky in a funny way. The baskets are not easy to adjust to one's ears, but there are alternative 'tricks' for that - as long as the earrings get custom made. For 2-3 cts earrings... it makes sense
