Hand creating a custom ring, start to finish.

AJ, I have loved this whole thread! Not only interesting but your ring is gorgeous. Your jeweler is a great find, and a great
artist! Your ring is wonderful! I love everything about it!

AJ, I have noooo idea how I missed this until now, but wow! Thank you so much for sharing the entire process with us. That ring is YOU to a tee, and you wear it so incredibly well! Many congrats on such a gorgeous and unique piece that will be in your family for generations!

I've really enjoyed following the story of your incredible ring -- from ebay to its new home. Congratulations. :appl: :appl: :appl: It is perfect. What gorgeous craftsmanship, too. And I  the combination of metals!

Thanks for taking the time to post this, it's fascinating.

Do you know what is done with the waste gold and platinum?

Aoife,
I asked Mike and he said that, yup, the left over or waste pieces all go back one or two times a year to their metals supplier, to be refined back into pure metals. But of course, they buy it as pure and sell it back as scrap, so that kind of thing is a cost consideration with this process.

Whereas, for example vendors who use CAD and wax would have very little to no cast-off metals during production, I imagine.

hth ::)

Thanks for asking about this. It's one of those practical details that I find fascinating. I think I was taken a little by surprise at how much scrap metal there was, so it's good to know it doesn't go to waste.

It's amazing to see how much work goes into the making of a custom piece. Of course, the finished ring is just gorgeous. :appl:

Thank you ladies, I only just saw your new comments and wanted to say I appreciate all of them, thank you for your kind posts :wavey:

With a bit of luck, I should have some new sketches from Mike this weekend, designs for the Jeff White blue tourmaline
that is in my avatar  ;)

I learned quite a lot today! Thank you so much for taking us on this journey - it was amazing from start to finish! Your ring is, indeed, a fine work of art.

Thanks SO much for letting us follow this saga.
Your ring/diamond is to die for.
What wonderful craftsmanship.
I really enjoyed watching all the steps and you have a real piece of art on your finger.

Such an interesting thread! So much goes into making a ring!! By the way- that stone is amazing

Okay I know I'm totally late to this thread (how did I miss it before?!!), but this is one of the best threads I've ever seen on PS! Unbelieveable-no wonder custom work isn't always the least expensive option! And it's so awesome that you got to see the process every step of the way, too! Thank you for taking the time to post all these photos with the captions!

I love your ring-it's gorgeous and so modern and unique! (Pretty sure I posted in your SMTR thread about it, but just in case I wanted to post here! ::) )

It is gorgeous and a very special ring!

Wow, this is so cool! I love the process pictures, and your ring is really unique and special.

This thread makes me wish I had asked my own jeweler to take pictures when he made my ring. I suppose I'll just have to have another one made at some point . . .

Really cool ring!

I've really enjoyed watching your amazing piece come to life!
