Halo with Prongs? So confused.....

Ok so - I''ve been searching through Pricescope through some time now and I love what I have learned. I especially love ovals with halos in 18K white gold. Which is why my soon to be fiance and I are in the process of ordering one. I''m buying offline, and have not seen the ring yet, but have seen the cert, and a picture of the setting seperately. I feel fine in the diamond itself. My question is with the setting. I wanted an oval with a halo and I see that the setting has prongs? I''m sure this is such a silly question, but I don''t think I''ve seen an oval halo w/ prongs before. Will these deter from the beauty? When they say "bezel" does that means no prongs, but also not seeing the whole diamond? Any advice..or pictures/links you think would clarify would be awesome. I''m going to try and post a picture of the setting, just have to figure it out. Thanks!!!

Off the point a tad, but have you seen photos of the actual oval stone? It''s very hard to buy fancy cuts from the certs/numbers alone and you don''t want to end up with a dreaded bowtie effect!! If you can get a pick of the stone to post here, someone will be able to advise whether it''s a good stone or not.

Back to the point, you can have a halo with prongs or bezel set I believe. Bezel set is a thin part of metal that holds the diamond in place. It sorts of hugs the diamond around the very outside edge, you will cover a minute amount of stone that won''t even be noticable in my opinion. They are very secure settings though! I am sure someone will chime in with photos, I don''t have any.

i have a halo with prongs. you can barely tell they are there. I think for the stone to be bezel set the setting has to be custom made for the stone.

Honey22 - Thanks for your input! I haven''t seen a picture of the ring. I have tried to find pictures that represent a bow tie effect in an oval and for the life of me I can''t see what anyone is talking about - now I''m a super diamond novice, so I don''t really know. Does a bowtie take away from sparkle? Or is it just a shape you see inside the diamond??

MrsSalvo - Thank you so much! That picture of the bezel set made me realize that''s not what I wanted - your ring is AMAZING! I guess with that much sparkle how could you notice prongs right?

A bowtie is analogous to the arrows in a round. It doesn''t take away from the sparkle, but a big one can be distracting/unattractive.

While it's not a cushion stone, per se... The Legacy was one of the inspirations for lots of gorgeous cushion halo designs on PS. It has a very very fine milgrain bezel around the center stone. Check out the Show Me The Ring forum for Cushion Halos, you will love it! There, you will see prong set halos & bezel set halos.

The bezel halo posted above is kind of large in the photo that made you realize you didn't want a bezel! I would, too! That ring is gorgeous but the metal in the bezel is too much for my personal taste. But it doesn't have to be that way! Either way, you will have a lovely lovely ring. Can't wait to see it!

Just wanted you to see a more proportionate bezel halo. At first I thought I didn't want a bezel set halo but then I saw one in person!

I was told the fine bezel makes the center stone look a little bit bigger and more pronounced by the designer. But...I love the prongs, too. So... I guess it's just a question of what you love MORE.

The truth is that it really doesn''t matter whether or not there are prongs. A well-executed halo will look beautiful with or without prongs. It matters more the size of the halo vis-a-vis the size of the center stone. It matters more how thick the halo is, and how closely the diamonds encircling the halo are to the center stone, whether you set it with a really thin bezel or prongs. It''s harder to cast a perfectly thin bezel b/c it has to be done to match a specific stone, but so long as the proportions are right, a halo will look good whether or not there are prongs holding the center stone. Mrs. Salvo''s ring is a really good example of a well done halo with prongs. You will notice that you can''t even really see the prongs. They are more aesthetic in a very subtle way. But if that halo wasn''t so perfectly executed, then the existence of prongs wouldn''t matter. It''s the fact that the halo is perfect for the stone that matters.

bliss and isabelle bring up an excellent point that the halo to stone ratio is part of what can make or break a halo setting. If the halo is too large or too much metal compared to the stone, it can look off. I agree the tiffany legacy is a much better example of a well done bezel..a favorite ring of mine for sure too.
