I am not that familiar with hair coloring techniques, having had my hair highlighted only a few times. Yesterday I went to a salon to get highlights in my hair. Any other time I had them done, the hair stylist used toner in my hair but yesterday after shampooing the dye out, she did not use toner. Is this normal procedure now? My hair looks fine, but is the color going to fade more rapidly without the addition of the toner? Thanks in advance for your help, I''m starting to worry that I spent a lot of money and my hair is going to look awful very quickly!

Did she use bleach or a colour to do the highlights? Toner is often used after bleaching but it isn't essential, it depends on the result required, with a high lift colour or just colour then a toner isn't needed.

I am sure you have nothing to worry about! Whatever you use, highlights tend to blend in a bit after the first few shampoos anyway as you know, but it shouldn't change drastically.

Thanks, Lorelei, for your quick response. I think she used a color, not bleach to do the highlights. I feel like such a dunce about this stuff because I am so low maintenance about my hair, most of the time I just wash it and go! I wanted a bit of a lift for my 36th birthday and to cover up the gray I''m starting to get, but I didn''t want to get a full dye job yet. So hopefully this turns out ok.

Most welcome! In that case then a toner probably wasn''t needed, so nothing to worry about! Don''t feel like a dunce - when you are newish to colouring it can be confusing with all the techniques and various chemicals used! That is probably an excellent choice to have the highlights rather than committing to a full colour!
