I recently started running and my rings would get a little tight when I ran but quickly return to normal. It’s been unseasonably warm and humid here and, on Saturday it was muggy and 84 and I tied about 30 balloons for a party after a 20 minute run. My poor finger had enough and blew up around my wedding ring. Luckily, I have a bezel set e-ring with an open bottom that I was able to pry off after icing my hand all day and using lotion on Friday when I first noticed the swelling was worse. The wedding ring wouldn’t budge then got worse on Saturday. DH and I tried everything to get it off and I ended up in Urgent Care Sunday morning. They tried too but couldn’t get it off. So I agreed to have it cut off. I was pretty desperate and frustrated by that point so I probably would’ve agreed to a finger amputation!

Anyway, the swelling has gone down and my finger looks normal-ish. But I have a knot between my hand and first knuckle on the finger still. I’ve been icing and massaging and drinking lots of water. And, even though my finger looks better, even my cut wedding band with a gap in it won’t fit on. Any ideas? Do I just have to wait this out for a while? At what point do I just get my rings resized? I’m thinking all of our failed attempts to remove it created this knot and it’ll go away.

Sorry, don’t know why this posted three things three times! I’ll ask to have the others removed

Omg! Holy tourniquet! Stay hydrated! Not just water though make sure you're intaking electrolytes.

Did you normally keep your rings in 24/7?

Up until I started running they came on and off either easily or with little effort if I was a little swollen. Funny thing is - at 9 mos pregnant I couldn’t even fit shoes on but my rings were not tight.

OH DEAR GOD! I never could wear my rings when working out, even just a brisk walk, because my fingers swelled and would hurt! I'd have "sausage fingers." Sorry this happened to you. I had my rings on when I delivered my child, but did have swollen feet during the last couple months of pregnancy. We must process water the same way! I don't know what to say about resizing/sizing up. I'd just try not wearing them while you work out.

Blimey!! My fingers suffer terribly over the last few years with heat / cold swelling & shrinking, but you take the first prize here! I would keep up with the massage & lotion, then maybe see your Doctor if this becomes regular.

I don't think it will be anything to worry about, but just a capillary thing. I have a form of Raynauds that is painful, but not as severe as it could be, it means that sometimes my beloved wedding set (plain band, full eternity & solitaire) get split to make way for comfort, with the eternity going onto the right hand. We are in full swing Autumn here in the U.K. now, heading to winter which is the worst time for my fingers. The cold outside & heating inside every shop or home, makes for pain & swelling & tight rings. I'm chalking it up to age :roll

The ring was definitely too tight if swelling from heat and manual activity caused it to get stuck. Leave all rings off for now and resize the ring in a month. Keep the hand elevated when you are seated, gentle (very gentle!) massage of the finger to encourage blood flow may help. I could go on but I'll stop here.

For some reason I'm having trouble posting.

I'm so sorry, Puppmom. That must have been traumatic.

Hugs,
Deb

Oh Puppmom, This looks painful.

Ouch! Well the ring can certainly be repaired at some point and I hope how soon your finger repairs itself! That really looked painful!

Thanks for all the advice!

It was very strange to go from rings I could take on and off to snug but off with a little work to I can’t get them off so quickly. It was claustrophobic. Such a head trip! And the more I tried to get the band off the worse it swelled.

It’s also weird to not have my rings on after almost 10 years of constant wear.

I think I’ll leave them off for a while like suggested and then get resized if necessary (although that seems likely). I guess I’ve just got to decide when to resize - like at what point might be a good gauge of my true (new) size.

Hubby is not happy about this. I think he’s a little superstitious.

I hope your finger is doing better today. Hugs!!

Yeeeouch!!!! That looks completely painful and claustrophobic for your poor finger. I hope you're better soon!

Wow! That baby is swollen! :eek2:
I can commiserate with the claustrophobic finger thing (though not to this extent). I pushed a ring over my too big knuckles and could not get it back off. I had to sit with my hand in ice cold water for 1/2hr just to have any wiggle room.

It's definitely time to size up. Which could be a good thing right? Can you say new jewelry! :Up_to_something2:

I ended up getting a temporary band from a local jeweler. Nothing fancy - a dainty yellow gold stacker. My rings are a 5ish and the new band is a 7!

The jeweler was really helpful and made several suggestions to bring down the swelling. I have a physical upcoming and may discuss with doctor because I’m worried I damaged the tissue trying to get it off. There’s a lump that almost feels solid between my knuckles. Hopefully it’s just temporary.

The jeweler suggested I wait a while (at least 6 months) before resizing.
